Disney Pursuing Two More Writers For New 'Star Wars' Franchise

Recently, Michael Arndt ('Toy Story 3') was hired by Disney to pen the script for their new 'Star Wars' film. However, as the recently formed union between Disney and Lucasfilm has made very clear, there will not be just one new movie. At the very least, we'll be getting a new trilogy, and the question as to whether Arndt was intended to write all three movies of that new trilogy appears to have been answered. Disney is reportedly courting Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg to write the next installments. 'Star Wars' fans should be well acquainted with the name Lawrence Kasdan, as he wrote both 'The Empire Strikes Back' and 'Return of the Jedi.' He also wrote 'Raiders of the Lost Ark.' Kinberg's resume boasts the likes of 'X-Men: First Class,' 'Sherlock Holmes,' and 2014's 'X-Men: Days of Future Past.' It should be noted that no official deal is on the table.

This is great news. While I can't say I'm at all disappointed that George Lucas will not be heavily involved in the new trilogy, to completely sever ties with the tradition of this iconic franchise would be unwise. While we all have our favorites among the original trilogy, more often than not it seems the debate comes down to 'Empire' or 'Jedi.' Having the writer of those two films on board would be a major boost for the new series. As to Kinberg, he has his own experience working within franchises with having written two X-Men films and one of the Sherlock Holmes movies. I have no doubt that he'll be an asset as well. Of course, all of this writer news is well and good, but when will Disney finally give us some clue as to who is directing at least the first new film? So far, the only indications we've been given involve struck down rumors from directors who were thought to be in the running. It's going to take a healthy collaborative effort between the writer and director if there is to be any hope of recapturing the magic of those first three films.

What do you guys think? Excited Kasdan may be returning to 'Star Wars?' Will Kinberg make suitable addition?

If Cameron is made director, the film will devolve into some bland 'evil corp/generic government vs. band of misfits without acting skills' film. He is NOT the director for Star Wars. The man can do visuals, but he SUCKS at story and subtlety. Star Wars may not seem like high art, but what made the Originals so good were the little things, the quiet elements.

Chewbacca scaring a mouse droid, Luke starring into a twin sunset showing all the longing and frustrations at a destiny he can almost sense, the realization in anger just how close Luke was to his father's mistake, the banter and jokes, how even the slow parts seem to keep moving...

Even the best actors have been in terrible movies from time to time. So maybe great writers can write a terrible movie from time to time, like the ones people are mentioning. Actors can auto pilot lazily through a movie for a paycheck, so its not that hard to believe a writer could do the same.

If this guy has had recent success, then give him a break. Also petition to make James Cameron the director for star wars.

Often comes down to a debate between Jedi and Empire?

I'm actually pleasantly surprised by that. Return of the Jedi was my favourite for a looooooooooong time, but that seems to be the one that people shit on the most. I always heard debate between "Star Wars" and "Empire". I never cared about the Ewoks or anything. The Vader/Luke stuff made the entire movie for me.

@The McDougal Bugle

I went crazy on Nick's review on NfS: Most Wanted 2012 and I think you should calm down. Jeez.

@Article

Uhh, yay? I don't know who these guys are so still not interested for Star Wars 7. It's gonna take something like the announcement of a director to get me interested......to watch in on DVD.

I hope this movie is based on Lando Calrissian. That no good dirty swindler deserves his break.

Kasdan wrote the screenplay and directed The Dreamcatcher that was horrific. The more I think about it, it's catching lightning in a bottle not a consistency worth bringing back decades later.

I hope Kasdan is the writer because it’s about time someone cared about this property. since he has such a history with George Lucas and writing for his films. i know new ownership means they want someone new to give their take especially since Kinberg has had some recent success with the X-men franchise but I’d like to see the man who did my favorite Indiana Jones movie and Star Wars back where he belongs.
