Disney Purchases Lucasfilm, Sets New 'Star Wars' Movie For 2015

In a truly unexpected turn of events, George Lucas has sold his Lucasfilm empire to the Disney corporation for a whopping $4.05 billion. Disney will pay close to half of that in cash upfront and half in stock options. The current co-chair of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy, will be taking over as president of the company. It appears Disney does not intend to simply rest on the name they've just acquired. It has already been announced that they will be putting a new 'Star Wars' film in theaters in 2015, with more films arriving every two to three years for some time after. They've made it a point to note that Lucas will be serving as creative consultant on these films, not directing or writing. This effectively shuts out Fox from any Star Wars related business including merchandising. Here's what Lucas had to say...

"For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next. It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney’s reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment and consumer products.”

This is huge! It's hard to believe we've actually reached this day. It's a little surreal. Those of use who have been complaining for years about Lucas' meddling with and corrupting the greatness of 'Star Wars' have always recognized the problem has been his maniacal level of control over every creative decision. Now that he has relinquished that control, we must reevaluate our perception of nearly every 'Star Wars' announcement. A new movie in 2015 that won't be directed or written by Lucas? Ok, now I'm excited. Not sure what finally drove Lucas, who has seemed quite impervious to fan outrage since 1997, to pass the torch and step down off the throne, but I'm going to offer my respect and sincere thanks. Disney is sitting pretty right now; controlling both Marvel and Lucasfilm. On the one hand, you want to bemoan the fact that one massive corporation controls so many of the inevitable blockbusters of the next several years. However the relative autonomy Disney has given Marvel, and the creative success the Marvel films have enjoyed in addition to the commercial, leads me to believe this is a great move for everyone...including we fans. I can't wait to see what stories from the 'Star Wars' universe are explored in...'Episode VII?'

Ok, Spillios, this is  a big one so speak up! What do you think of this deal, of the end of an era? Excited? Apprehensive? How about the new 'Star Wars' movie?

It seems that more and more, every day, we are living in a world of franchises. I hope we do not forget that every franchise we recognize today that winds up getting sold for however many billion dollars  down the road started out as a lone creative idea festing in the minds of untried and unknown individuals. If new ideas aren't tested and allowed space to breathe and grow, then our beloved franchises that are eating up all of our time and money are going to fester and rot.

Look at the terrible sequels, prequels, and remakes that have glutted our theaters for the past decade. I won't name titles, because people are going to argue over which ones were good and which were bad - and that's not the point I want to make. Just remember how those terrible movies (whichever ones those are for you) put an indellible stain on the properties we loved in the first place.

I'm excited about this news, but I hope that moviemakers as well as fans remember how much more importnat good storytelling is than brand name recognition.

Keep George Lucas in the car, but keep him OUT of the driver's seat!

Fuck yeah! A new Star Wars movie is coming out! Good or bad, I'll be there in the theater opening day.

As a fan of ALL the films - prequels included - I just really wanted to hear the news some day that Episode VII would be coming out; no matter who was helming it. Ever since I first saw the originals, I've wanted the story to continue!

Oh yeah! Give me a Brad Bird directed Star Wars and I'm 100% on board.

This could go very badly or end up a very good thing. Time will tell. Regardless, I knew that sooner or later we would get more Star Wars films. I just thought it would be after Lucas died.

I heard George Lucas is donating the 4 billion to charity for education.

Revenge of the Sith was better than Return of the Jedi, just my opinion. Jar Jar didn't talk, I finally bought into the characters, the dialogue wasn't as bad, and nothing in Revenge was as idiotic as the bears losing one guy and defeating the empire. Just so many more problems with Returns. Also there were a few stand outs in the prequels. I loved Kamino and that section of the film, I thought the Pod-Race was cool and that film's real death was not casting a 14 year old really dark but intelligent kid as Anakin.

No matter what people say Hayden sold me on him as Darth Vader at the tail end of Revenge of the Sith and for that I was like ok there you go. No this might get me some hate but just how I rank em: 5,4.3,6,2,1. Coincidently Rotten Tomatoes lines perfectly up with my ranking lol. I just really don't get the hate for 3 and I think nerd rage is what makes us think the prequel trilogy is garbage. It's garbage by comparison and they are still fun movies.

Oh and 7,8, and 9 will be based at first at least on whatever writing Lucas gave over so yeah guys don't forget that little part of the story. So does everyone agree with story by Lucas, heavily edited script by ? and directed by great ?

as long as lucas isn't writing or directing, a new star wars film couldn't be any worse than the garbage prequel trilogy he made

Yeah this one knocked me for a loop when I heard. I love it but it was still a shock to see Lucas handing over everything to Disney. I think there is the potential for a lot of good things to come out of the Star Wars universe and without one guy trying to make his own vision there is a better chance Episode VII will be good.
