Directors Chosen For 'Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2'

As one of the biggest surprises of 2009, it seemed only a matter of time before 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs' landed itself a sequel. But while part deux is definitely in development, it does not yet have the official green light. Hoping to secure the go-ahead, Sony has selected directors for the project. Sony Animation artists Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn were given the gig despite having barely any directorial experience between the two. While Cameron has only directed one full-length feature, 'Open Season 3,' 'Cloudy 2' will represent Pearn's directorial debut. Cameron has done quite a bit of voice acting for animated films while Pearn's resume boasts far more of the actual animating. Both guys however are quite familiar with 'Cloudy' universe. Pearn was the first film's head of story while Cameron served as a story artist. It's important to note that Phil Lord and Chris Miller were relative novices themselves when they directed the first 'Cloudy;' the MTV animated series 'Clone High' being their only credit. Lord and Miller, who just finished directing '21 Jump Street,' will remain on as executive producers for the sequel.

I absolutely love the first film. I missed it in theaters, saw it on Netflix, and it completely won me over with its legitimately clever humor and easy charm. Given that the film quietly earned $230 million worldwide, I thought we would have seen a sequel long before now. It is further surprising that the sequel does not yet have a green light. I would hazard that, with directors now hired, it won't be long before the studio gives the nod. It's true that there is very little directing experience between the two, but I like the combination of talent here. Both of them understand the importance of story as well as artistry. Cameron's voice acting experience should also give him the insight necessary to elicit great performances from the as yet unassigned cast. It's also a great encouragement that they both know this world well. No word on plot details for the sequel other than that it will continue the adventures of inventor Flint Lockwood.

Any 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs' fans out there? Are you interested in a sequel?

I have a feeling that this will be based on Pickles To Pittsburgh.

Cool idea.

Clone High was such a fun show, I can see how it rubbed off on the first Cloudy. But  Open Season... 3. Yeesh... This gives me cause for alarm. But we shall see.
