Director Wants Michael Fassbender For 'RoboCop'

Source: BleedingCool

Now that MGM is back in the movie business, they've been tossing around a lot of names for the lead role of Alex Murphy in their remake of the 80's sci-fi action classic, 'RoboCop'. However, it would seem that director José Padilha already has someone in mind: during a recent appearance on Brazilian TV channel Globo 1, Padihla gave the audience an update on the film's progress and his choice for RoboCop, 'X-Men: First Class' star Michael Fassbender.

The director stated:

"I’ll film Robocop. I’m indeed writing the script, the writer is here with me in Rio, we’ve spent over the last 15 days working together, refining the script... I’ll be traveling this Friday back to LA, bringing this new version to discuss with the studio, and maybe begin with the casting, selecting actors… and the idea is to begin filming in February – February or March. That’s the idea, y’know, we never know in the American movie industry. We’re just delivering the project, but also we depend on the schedule of the actors… it’s tough.

I can’t talk yet, it’s too early to speak, but there are some actors I like. I really like [Michael] Fassbender, I’d like to talk to him — I’ll talk to him. There’s a possibility…"

Following in the footsteps of Peter Weller is a daunting task to be sure - not a lot of actors can do so much with only a small section of their mouth appearing from behind a giant cyborg mask. Could Fassbender do it? While he's still a relatively new face on the Hollywood circuit, his performances in nearly every film have been entertaining and interesting to watch and audiences really seem to like him as well, which goes a long way towards ticket sales. However, since he's currently double booked at the moment (he will shortly be filming 'At Swim-Two-Birds' and 'Prisoner') and may or may not play a synthetic android in the upcoming 'Alien' prequel 'Prometheus', it's highly unlikely that this is anything beyond a directorial wishlist.

Well because this kind of role could help them both grow as actors that and it would have be a challenge

Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Renner? Those guys are charming that's their thing, why do you want to make a smooth guy act like a robot?

As I mentioned before I would like to see someone like Bradley Cooper take on this role. I think he can do it well. If not him someone like Christian Bale perhaps Jeremy Renner.

There's a handful of people that would work I think, not much more but I am sticking with Bradley Cooper for my number one. I feel this kind of role would really push him to perform at his best.

Considering the body type the makers looked for originally, I guess it's time for Christian Bale to get skinny once again.

I agree with Russell, I don't think a lot of people understand that an actor relies on his face and body movements a lot. Weller's face was completely covered for Robocop and the only expression he was allowed to convey with his mouth was surprise and shock, like when he found his house and as Robocop he had to move like a machine. Most actors who play robots act like people or they act like people pretending to be machines (with the natable expection of Brent Spiner as Data in Star Trek), Weller acted like a machine, every movement was mechanical! Yet he was still able to communicate emotion like when he had his nightmare, he had quick and confused head movements, all in all Peter Weller's Robocop was one of the all time great sci-fi performances!
