In a shocking and sad turn of events, director Tony Scott died yesterday at the age of 68. According to reports, Scott leaped off San Pedro's Vincent Thomas bridge in an apparent suicide. Information found by police in Scott's vehicle led to the discovery of a note in his office. Scott's body was discovered at 4:30pm. After helming commercials for many years, Scott directed his first feature film, 'The Hunger,' in 1983, but his first major break came when he directed Tom Cruise in 'Days of Thunder' for producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. He formed the production company Scott Free with his older brother Ridley Scott in 1995. Scott is survived by his wife Donna and his twin sons Frank and Max.

This is truly tragic news. Tony Scott had a profound impact on the landscape of action cinema. He established a kinetic, sleek, and gritty style, and created some truly iconic entries into the genre. 'The Last Boy Scout,' 'Top Gun,' 'Beverly Hills Cop II,' 'Crimson Tide,' 'True Romance,' the list is too immense to name them all. His collaborations with Denzel Washington often brought out the best in both artists and allowed Scott to infuse high caliber dramatic tension into his films. Even Scott's weakest films are visually captivating and well worth a watch; a rare gift for so prolific a director. Scott Free Productions was responsible for a great many television and film projects including this year's 'The Grey' and 'Prometheus.' As formidable in the industry as Ridley Scott currently is, Tony never lived in his brother's shadow and instead established himself as a fiercely individual filmmaker and a mentor to many up-and-coming directing talents. He will be sorely missed and our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and all film fans who have ever been touched by his work.

What is your favorite Tony Scott movie?

This really sucks. Man on Fire is probably my favorite Denzel movie. Great director

@Kick-ass:

Where did I say suicide was okay? It's not, my baby brother killed himself and I live with that every single day for the rest of my life. I don't think he was a coward for being in pain and taking what he saw as the only way out. I wish everyday that I had gotten the chance to help him and see just how bad things had gotten, but I didn't and I have to live with that.

What you need to do is stop assuming you know anything about the situation or his life in general and stop calling the man a coward for making what I'm sure was the most heartbreaking and difficult decision in his life.

People who are suicidal aren't in the right state of mind to process their actions, to Tony Scott, I'm sure the feeling of loneliness and depression weighed down on him, much harder than we'll ever know now. Say what you will about suicide, but saying the dead don't deserve peace or that they're nothing more than cowards when you know literally nothing about the situation or what was going on in his mind is just plain ignorant and wrong. And you should be ashamed of yourself for assuming that they shouldn't even be told to rest in peace. Seriously, it's a way of conveying  a feeling of sadness and condolences, saying the dead don't deserve peace when you don't even know them is disgusting.

And yes, I did say R.I.P. when Ryan Dunn and Zach Hartwell died, what's your point? That I'm a bad person because of it?

This is an article written by a psychiatrist who has also had personal experience with major depression.

http://www.cnn.com/2012/08/21/health/raison-suicide-tony-scott/inde...

"But as much as I hate suicide, I also understand it. One of the things people have repeatedly posted in comments responding to Scott's death is that you can't weigh in on why someone might commit suicide unless you've really had your life torn apart by an episode of major depression. I agree." - Charles Raison

@Kick-ass  My line about, "Learn to put a higher value on life rather than writing the deceased off as cowards" was meant to be a reminder that you should view the world in such black & white terms.

To be clear, Kick-Ass, I don't hold your comments against you. If I knew you better perhaps I would understand why you take the view that suicide makes a person cowardly. I have extensive personal experience with the issue, I urge you to be more empathetic, and try to educate yourself on the topic of depression and suicide. You are free to choose not to do so, and stick to your beliefs about suicide. I know I won't change your views, I only want to challenge your views, hopefully so that you will question that archaic way of condemning suicide in such black and white terms, cowardice vs. bravery, weakness vs. strength. The reality of it is a grey area, somewhere in between those terms. It is truly rare that anything is black and white.

Meanwhile on Tony's voice-mail:

"Tony, good news, your test results were mixed up with another patient, you don't have cancer."
