Director Hired For Adaptation Of Stephen King's 'Cell'
Put down that cellphone for a minute and listen up, because it may just save your life. Stephen King's novel 'Cell' is slated to be adapted for the big screen via Cargo Entertainment. The story revolves around a comic book artist who is on a business trip to try and sell his latest project. While in Boston, an event called The Pulse occurs that causes anyone using their mobile phone to become bloodthirsty zombies and attack one another. The screenplay was penned by King and Adam Alleca ('Last House on the Left') and, as of now, John Cusack is set to star. The film version has just hired Tod Williams to handle directing duties. Williams last helmed 2010's 'Paranormal Activity 2.' Production on 'Cell' is set to begin this May.
So the zombie trend doesn't appear to be going anywhere anytime soon, eh? Alright fine, I suppose there are worse supernatural fads that could be plaguing us. While I am interested in this story, it sounds eerily like the plot for 'The Signal.' In 'The Signal,' a strange television broadcast turns all who see it into mindless kill-crazed beasts, and the world is thrown into chaos. Mind you, I am not at all saying that King ripped off 'The Signal,' in fact his novel was published a full year before the indie horror film was released, but the film version may not be able to avoid comparisons. As to the hiring of Tod Williams, I have to say it seems a really odd choice. Sure, he directed 'Paranormal Activity 2,' which has been my favorite sequel in that franchise so far, but it's not as if he's a seasoned horror filmmaker. Prior to that, his projects were indie dramas, comedies, and a documentary short. Not that past projects always dictate future ones, but it just seems there are plenty of eager, genre-centric directors who might have better served the project. Perhaps even one of the three directors of 'The Signal.'
What do you guys think? Are you intrigued by the plot of 'Cell?' Are the similarities to 'The Signal' making anyone else think the movie version of 'Cell' is going to have to work hard to distinguish itself?

The Phonecrazies in Cell don't even remotely resemble zombies once their 'programming' begins to kick in. I read this book when it first came out, and I've always wanted to see a movie adaptation of it (even though most Stephen king adaptations turn out to be fucking terrible). So yah, this is pretty goddam exciting. There's so much potential for incredibly interesting visuals present in the book. Ah fuck, so exciting.

This was the last Stephen King book I read. Mostly because it SUCKS.
The beginning is great, horrific, violent, bloody. Then it becomes a loooooong slog that reminds me of nothing so much as The Stand if instead of a plague destroying the country it was a signal sent through cell phones that turns people into zombies.
Psychic zombies. That can fly.
Sorry if that's a spoiler, but the book is seven years old. And the ending is so bad, when I read it, I thought I was missing a page or two.
I'll take a pass---and a big ol' smelly shit on a movie of Cell.

This was the first Stephen King book I read from front to back. I always found him too wordy and so the beginnings of the other books bored me. The opening of this book he'd printed in an issue or Entertainment Weekly, and stopped just far enough in where I had to get the book and read the whole thing. I liked it. Kinda ended abruptly though.

Actually that´s what I didn´t liked of the book, that they start to think or something, I enjoyed the beginning and the middle a lot but the ending is mehhh. I still want to see how this turns out.

Well I don't want to spoil anything but in cell they were much more than just zombies. The characters slowly found out how powerful they are over time. The only thing I worry about is the ending. The book has a pretty disappointing ending and I really hope they go another way with the movie.
