Troika Pictures has made a director change for their upcoming thriller 'The Hive,' which follows a 911 operator desperately trying to save a teenage girl from a ruthless killer. 'The Hive' was originally to be helmed by Joel Schumacher, but the decision was recently made to replace him with Brad Anderson ('The Machinist,' 'Session 9'). Anderson seems very excited about the project, stating that the script, by Rich D'Ovidio ('Exit Wounds') contains all the elements he typically looks for in a thriller. The film, which at one time was set to star Halle Berry before she dropped out due to scheduling conflicts, is scheduled to begin shooting in the spring. No word yet as to who will be replacing Berry. The film is slated for release sometime in 2013.
This is one of those situations wherein a change in the director's chair is a good omen for a film. Don't get me wrong, I like 'The Lost Boys' as much as the next guy, probably moreso actually, and I even liked 2009's 'Blood Creek,' but Schumacher has proven to be woefully inconsistent in both the quality and commercial success of his movies. Did you see last year's 'Trespass?' No? Neither did anyone else, despite its starring Nicolas Cage and Nicole Kidman, but I assure you it's fiercely bad. I also won't pretend that the vileness of his tenure as Batman director doesn't still leave a bilious taste in our mouths. Meanwhile Anderson has quietly been making interesting and visually striking thrillers under the radar and is one of more exciting talents working today. I don't know that 'The Hive,' as intriguing as it sounds, will represent his big break, but I have no doubt that Anderson has the chops to craft a dark, thought-provoking thriller that will, if nothing else, be superior to another Schumacher disaster.
What do you guys think? Any Brad Anderson fans out there?
