The comedy troupe Derrick Comedy came to the Alamo Ritz on 6th St(which some of you remember from the party) on Thursday to present their new film. They have a following because of some offbeat comedy skits and they presented a short of the Mystery Team that was shown at San Diago Comic Con...

Then came a full length feature of the Mystery Team.

Starring Donald Glover (found out from Q&A is a writer on 30 Rock), DC Pierson, Dominic Dierkes and Aubrey Plaza ( who can be seen in Funny People as Daisy...so hot!). The story revolves around a trio of friends in High School clinging to their habits as Jr Detectives since the age of 7. When a little girl asks the Mystery Team to solve her parent's murder, they get excited yet worried to take on a case that does not involve who has been fingering the neighbor's pie.

Honestly I didn't know much of Derrick Comedy. I saw this as a low budget comedy. Working at the Ritz myself, I seen some movies being presented as special events. Like the The Room for instance. And I am going to name drop...I seen Korey and Leon sitting on screening of that one. Word up Guys!

But back to Mystery Team. One of the benefits of working for the Alamo Drafthouse is of course free movies. I was impressed with their Q&A after the Thursday showing I had to see the movie. I was well entertained. I liked the world they created. The not so young detectives were a naive bunch amongst a community of crass 8 year olds, strippers and drug dealers trying to solve a murder with only chocolate milk to comfort them. There are some smart parts. Not as many as asinine stretches of absurd scenes. With a couple gross out scenes to boot. This is actually my kind of movie after working for the day. Having a pint to drink helps out a bit also.

I would give this movie, if I had to pay for it, a matinee. Get in out of this Texas heat, have a beer with some friends and watch this movie. These guys are funny. Here is one more for the road...
