Source: Coming Soon

Coming Soon says that Guillermo del Toro announced that The Hobbit does not have a start date, nor will it until MGM sorts out its financial troubles.

He said, "It's not greenlit. That's categorical... We've been caught in a very tangled negotiation... There cannot be any start dates until the MGM situation gets resolved. They do hold a considerable portion of the rights."

Responding to rumors that the film would shoot in 3D, del Toro said that, while 3D remains a possibility, it has been discussed "literally once" in the production offices and it is not being planned at this time. The current production budget has been drawn without 3D in mind.

He also adds: "We have designed all the creatures. We've designed the sets and the wardrobe. We have done animatics and planned battles sequences.... We are very, very prepared for when it is finally triggered."

@V Shit, that sucks. Del Toro seemed like the perfect director for a film set in Middle Earth. Oh, well.

If they put out the Hobbit movie it's almost a guaranteed money maker, unless of course it's another Hellboy kinda movie.

Del Toro...PLEASE cast your frequent collaborator DOUG JONES, he seriously is THE MAN when it comes to acting under pounds of make-up.

@Shy: He's probably doing Tintin.

I'd love to see this happen soon... but given MGM's money woes, it's doubtful.

MGM will get around the money problems, it will take time tho and ALOT of help from Sony.

@Ron Grijs: Daniel Craig has a contract for Bond 23 and the fine that MGM will have to pay makes it look like they better off with him as Bond, besides, he's a great actor.

I don't think they'll continue the new Bond story with Daniel Craig. By the time they are out of this mess it has been too long and I fear Craig will get a sh*tload of problems with his public guy/guy kiss. It doesn't bother me but a studio might not have faith that he can play the womanizer that is bond.

I really do hope that they will begin the Hobbit soon. Gandalf isn't getting any younger and any chance of a Saruman cameo is gone if they don't start soon aswell. Someone else playing Gandalf would definatly make me lose interest. He is (to me atleast) the link between the hobbit and the LOTR.

MGM $$$ trouble has put the screws to many a project. Bond and The Hobbit are just two (albiet 2 very big flicks). In turn, this could cost Daniel Craig as Bond, We could loose our Sir Ian as or Current Gandalf, Del Toro could go elsewhere, there is a real ripple effect.

Sad to see a once great studio left in Rubble.............
