I'm not one to discriminate in my Anime viewing, but honestly I seem to prefer light-hearted anime to the darker stuff. I would definitely put Death Note in the "darker stuff" category.
I think that Death Note is the rare series not intended to be deep entertainment, that just came out that way.
It you don't know by now, Death Note is a series about Light Yagami, a young man from Japan who finds a book entitled "Death Note" that will kill whoever's name is written within it. He uses the book to eliminate criminals and make and "ideal world" of which he would be king. Soon, he comes to the spotlight, though his true identity remains a secret. He is known as "Kira". Enter L, one of my favorite anime characters ever, a brilliant yet eccentric detective determined to bring Kira to justice.
The plot unfolds as a game of cat and mouse, leading to very entertaining and intelligent situations. It looks as if Kira has won, but then it turns ouf L is ten steps ahead of him. L is about to discover Kira, but really it's all part of Kira's plan, and so on and so forth.
Death Note is exquisitely well written and performed, and the animation gets the job done well enough. The music stands out as epic and fits the series so well that it'll blow your mind into pieces if you let it.
More importantly than all of this, the series raises the question of who is right. Is Kira justice? Or is he just a serial killer? Symbolism is played heavily and works well in every case. However, after episode 25, the series kind of jumps the shark. It's still satisfactory, but it just isn't the same. The exception to this is the ending, which I found very satisfactory.
Ultimately this is a series I would reccomend to anyone and everyone, if you haven't seen it yet, I'd reccomend either renting it or watching it on Hulu (yes Hulu is perfectly legal, that's where I watched it).
PS I don't really know what I'm going to do in this blog, I'll just do what I feel like and hopefully someone will read it.
