If it's crap ... We'll tell you
Randy Lander posted a statusI'd like to start this review by saying this... I am a huge fan of the Dead Space series and I adore the plot and pretty much everything else about it.
Dead Space 2 Severed can be bought on the Xbox Live Marketplace or Dead Space 2 store (at main menu) for 560 Microsoft points.
Severed starts you out as Gabe Weller, a Sprawl security officer who is in a Titan mine when an outbreak erupts. The protagonist of this expansion also has a wife, Lexine Murdoch, who he is trying to reach before Titan officers and other assholes do. The entire time that you make any conversation with Alexine is through your RIG while Titan officers monitor you. I've never played Dead Space: Extraction, but I am aware that this expansion does have some of the characters from Extraction so if you have played Extraction, you might want to buy this.
(Gabe speaking to Alexine on his RIG)
(Gabe Weller with his cool suit)
A great thing about this expansion is the return of the twitcher. Sure it's an insanely annoying enemy from the original Dead Space but it does make the fighting more intense. Something else about this game is that it is only two chapters long and the areas that you go through in this game are not for the most part new. There are about two new locations in the game and then the rest is you pretty much going backwards through many of the locations in Dead Space 2 from about Chapter 8- Chapter 1, with the new locations in there for you to go to the areas closer to the beginning of Dead Space 2 faster. As you go backwards through the Dead Space 2 locations you realize that the places that Isaac recently explored have gotten much worse (such as the morgue area where many of the originally human dead bodies are now sleeping Necromorphs that when awoken, which they do awake, try and kill you.)
(Heh another great upside down sequence in "Severed")
Since this expansion is so short you really don't get to care for this character much, until the ending. I won't spoil the ending, but I will say that this guy turns out to be very courageous and badass. I didn't see why the price for this was so low until I actually beat it after playing for an hour and a half. Where the shortness of the game is a negative there are still many good things about this expansion. The twitchers, new characters, some new locations, a new badass suit for Gabe, another great ending, and a protagonist with an accent are all things that make this game fun and exciting.
If I would have to rate this with the Spill crew's set of ratings I would have to give it a low Full Price because sure it is Dead Space but it is really short and the story is very similar to the Isaac/Nicole story from the original Dead Space. Then again it is 6 dollars which is a decent price for a game that's not very long.

Comment by David on March 5, 2011 at 1:54am A protagonist with an accent? EVERY game has a British person in it these days.
From what I've seen of this little DLC, it seems pretty neat. Ideal for anyone craving more Sprawl (even though there's not much new here).
Comment by LunaticLMD on March 4, 2011 at 12:04am I got the dlc and am satisfied, since I like Gabe/Lexine from Extraction. The ending was pretty good too.
It was short though. I can't believed I missed the twitcher in the main game, because they were annoying me in the dlc.

I knew going in it was only 2 chapters, but even then I was surprised by how short it was.
I'm half way finished with Extraction for the PS3 and although I don't know how it ends just yet... the the relationship between Weller and Lexine (now his wife) doesn't make ANY sense. In Extraction Weller and Lexine were side characters that accompanied you in missions... in fact the 1st time you encounter Lexine, Weller is bitching about her tagging along and often times throughout the game is a total ass to her. At one point an airlock nearly blows her out into space and you have to quickly save her. She even thanks you and comments how she's glad you aren't like Weller who would have left her to die (which in fact he kinda did because he's already in the building as this happens)
Anyways Severed happens 3 years after Extraction? so maybe something happens in that gap, but NONE of it is explained. And the ending to Severed didn't make any sense either. What was the point in bringing back a character only to kill him in the end? they mention something about Lexine being a test subject and I'm sure that will ultimately be the reason for this expansion, but it left you scratching your head and thinking.. what was the point of it all?
I think Severed had a lot of unanswered questions and even more WTF moments in regards to the story, but I actually liked it a lot and loved to see the return of the Twitchers! and for $7? there's hardly room for any real complaints! I can't wait to see the next chapter in the series!
