Any more, news that someone is remaking a classic horror film crops up about once a week or so. To the pile of iconic scary movies up for update, you can now add Dario Argento's 'Suspiria.' For those of you who haven't seen it, and believe me this is an oversight you will want to correct immediately, 'Suspiria' is the story of a young girl who travels to Germany to study at a prestigious school of dance. Unfortunately, the school also happens to be populated by malevolent supernatural forces and a series of bizarre and violent events begin to unfold. Crime Scene Pictures, a production and film financing company, is putting together a remake that will be shopped around the Cannes film market next month. The screenplay for the remake was penned by David Gordon Green ('The Sitter') who will also be directing. The new 'Suspiria' is currently in casting and the plan is to begin shooting in September.
Even as a horrorphile, I feel I'm pretty open-minded toward remakes. I don't get automatically riled up with each and every classic that gets a facelift and I've even enjoyed nearly everything Platinum Dunes has put out...nearly. But I must admit this particular project has my hackles up. It's not so much that they're remaking 'Suspiria,' which I'm not thrilled about but ultimately ok with, but rather the fact that they've put David Gordon Green in charge. I'll admit I liked 'Pineapple Express,' but Green also brought us the unfortunate 'Your Highness' and the woefully bad 'The Sitter' over the last couple years. I don't find him to be a very skilled filmmaker and I don't see him having the chops to pull off something like this. 'Suspiria' is far more visually complex and psychologically jarring than your average horror film and I don't see Green having the acumen to make it work. I mean come on, is Danny McBride going to turn up in the 'Suspiria' remake now? I would've at least liked to have seen an actual horror director take on this project, but what do you guys think?
Are you at all interested in a 'Suspiria' remake? Is Gordon Green the right choice? Who would you have pegged to direct?

Comment by NotTheWhosTommy on April 11, 2012 at 12:02pm Dude's been on a gradual decline. Going from great independent stuff like Snow Angels to a fun action comedy like Pineapple Express to the dismal efforts of Your Highness and The Sitter is just plain sad. Also, Suspiria shouldn't really be touched. It's like if a horror film was personified as a gorgeous painting... or a "Gore-gous", if I may say so myself. Don't fuck with it.
