Darth Corey presents: Modern Mythology: The History of Superhero Movies Part 1

With the Kick-Ass and soon Iron Man 2 frenzy, I'm compiling a short list very similar to the Great Tessa. I'm naming some popular Super hero movies with my opinion of them falling under 2 categories: Pass or fail. I'm skipping the 40s and 50s. Lets get started.

Batman (1966)

What can I say Batman(of the comics) is a legend. However this show feels like more a parody gilded in 60s than the source material itself. Somehow Connery in Bond balanced the absurdity better still remaining an action comedy and not just a comedy. 60s Batman has more in common with Maxwell Smart than 007 and it should be the opposite. 50s Superman at least a serious tone despite the fact Superman himself was a 50s father figure sterotype (very little like the comic) and went between live action and animation. I wish Batman did the same thing, but campy-ness haunts Batman till this day. PS: I know Robin got kids to watch but he sucks and I'm glad the joker killed one lol. At least this movie brought capers to the mainstream.

VERDICT: FAIL

Superman (1978)

A truly great film despite its flaws (Superman fly so fast to reverse time but cant stop 2 rockets?) Reeves' portrayal of Superman is perfect and Hackman's Luthor is sinister yet unassuming. This film makes you believe a man(well alien who somehow looks like a white man) can fly. 2 is good but no where near 1 and 3 after are unfornately cheap cash ins.

VERDICT: PASS

Batman ('89)

I'm so mixed about this movie. I appreciate it for being the first serious portrayal of Batman, but the film is dated. Burton made this darker but it's still a little too campy. Batman's costume looks dumb however Keaton's portrayal of the Batman is head and shoulders above Bale. Nicholson's Joker outshines Batman and this seems to be the partern. I like Joker's origin in this, but Alan Moore's Killing Joke is the gold standard. Joker should have a tragic yet comic like origin.

Burton doesn't get Batman. Gotham should be somewhat grounded in reality, and Batman should rarely kill and never run from a fight. He should be smart and cunning and plan before taking on super villians.

Overall I like this movie

VERDICT: PASS(well barely)

Punisher ('89)

This doesn't deverse a picture. This is just a bland corny 80s movie gilded with one of the best crime fighters of all time. Punisher got his start in Spider man comics trying to kill Spidey because Webhead was framed for a murder. Now Punisher is the Antihero of Antiheroes and puts the Bad in BADASS. He'll kill, torture, and destroy to get justice. He doesn't use Gadets like the Batman but guns, big guns. Forget the '80s movie tho.

Capt. America ('91)

I love the Capt. and we know who he is. He is the deified version of America. He killed Hitler 70 years before Torrantino did( I don't get the "Basterds" hype tho). I bet you did not know that the first Capt was Black tho( you think the government in the 40s would put a dangerous chemical on a white guy 1st?). :D

Anyway this film tried but it was boring, campy and silly. Now it looks like the flaming douche fag i mean torch is gonna drag poor Capt. through the mud again(Capt. isn't an asshole, guys bad casting). The guy was dripped in super serum, launched on a rocket, fought a red devil and was frozen. Why cant he catch a break?

VERDICT: FAIL

Batman and Robin ('97)

*sigh* What were they thinking? The film makes West Batman look like Shakespeare. Do I really near to elaborate? However I somehow thought this and powerrangers was entertaining when I was 6.

VERDICT: FAIL(SUPER FAIL)

Spawn ('97)

Another mixed review. The CGI for this film is terrible for today's standards(I still dont get avatar tho). I loved this when I was a kid. This is dumb, fun, action, but it may spark your interest in a great, black, comic Superhero born from hell.

VERDICT: PASS (Well Barely)

Blade ('98)

I loved this movie as a kid. It was a real game changer at its release. An African America serious superhero film with decent special effects and vampires, what more could I ask for? I dont really like Snipes (he made a racist comment about black women and my momma black lol), but I like this film. It set the stage for better super hero movies.

VERDICT: PASS

Seriously, I dunno what to say, I think that so far you are right.
I guess all the "questionable" movies come after Blade. It will be interesting to read what you think.
