According to the offical wiki for Muppet news, the movie has been in the works since 2005. During 2006, Brian Henson, Jim Henson's son and in charge of his late father's company, said, "Yes, we are making a Fraggle Rock movie and trying to get it to work. Fans should expect the movie "to do something that sort of stands next to the Fraggle Rock series rather than be a continuation of the show." Later on, the company released news about Ahmet Zappa would be writing a film.

In 2009, it was offically annouced that The Weinstein Company will be releasing the film.
