Cyrus Scans the New Releases for 8/24/2010...Part One

Another week, another list of the new home releases. SO many titles coming out this week that I was either able to get my hands on or thought was worthy of mention, either to go out of your way to check out or to completely avoid. Let's start out with my new tradition...

LOST: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION (Blu-Ray/DVD)

Is there anyone out there surprised that this is my big pick? I mean, sure, you could just go buy the Complete Sixth Season, but then you'd be some kind of wimpy half-assed Lost fan. Aww, isn't that cute, look at you with your incomplete collection of the separate seasons. Time to man up there, fanboys, because this final collection pulls out all the stops, packaging in a Senet game (the board game Jacob and Smokey were playing), a page from the captain's log of the Black Rock, an Ankh that seems to be...well, look closely, a relief map of the island, a UV flashlight (hmm, wonder what that's for?) and 37 discs of Lost wonderment. "What's this," you say. "Thirty seven discs? I only count thirty six!" Yeah...wonder where that last disk of unique-to-this-collection extras could be? I know it's here somewhere. That, amongst many other surprises, makes this not only my pick of the week, but the coolest complete collection of a television series ever released. Even after I re-watch every last episode and bonus feature, I'll need to keep this close just to be able stroke it tenderly from time to time.

THE AGE OF STUPID (DVD)

Pete Postlewaite acts as a guide for this documentary that imagines that humanity's end has already all but come about and he, as the last act of mankind, sends off a collection of news footage and information to space as a warning; a warning to not make the same mistakes we made. The film isn't anywhere near as nice as Al Gore about pointing the finger at our own willful stupidity in the destruction of our home. Certainly, if its data is to be believed, is the most frightening picture of our future since "The Day After" scared the beejezus out of a thirteen year old Cyrus. Some sloppy editing and amateurish animation kind of undercuts the seriousness of the climate change apocalyptic warning, as does some of its commentators who make the ominous claim that, realistically, for all extents and purposes, no matter what we do at this point, we're all already doomed. There's a long history on our planet of that kind of doom prediction, both from nutty guys on the street with placards and from scientists. Maybe I'll be eating my words when Postlewaite is sending his son Kal-El out into space in an escape rocket, but I'm willing to bet things aren't coming to a close as quickly as this doc suggests. Apparently, my words will be about all there is left to eat at that point.

AJAMI (Blu-Ray/DVD)

There's a first for everything, and "Ajami" makes for the first Israeli film I've seen that held my interest. Fans of "City of God" would do well to check out this 2009 Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film. The non-linear relation of the five chapters of this crime story is exactly the right way to tell the gripping and disturbing story of crime, desperation, Arab-Jewish prejudice (well, duh), and really, really bad birthday present buying decisions. It gets a bit confusing at points, to be sure, but by the end, it's clear that "Ajami", even with its non-professional actors, is a pretty incredible movie that you shouldn't miss.

DEATH NOTE COLLECTION (Blu-Ray)

I sure wish I had the contact info of whoever was in charge of sending THIS title to press. I got to see the two films at Fantastic Fest and fell in love with them then. For all of you who probably are like, "Huh?", "Death Note" is one story divided into two films that follows a young guy named Light who finds a magical notebook that will cause anyone whose name is written into it to die. The notebook was casually dropped into his life by the bored extra-dimensional demon called Ryuk, who follows him around, entertained by his attempts to be a God of judgment on humanity. Light's nemesis is the anonymous detective "L", who races Light in a contest to figure out who is who first. Unfortunately, this set doesn't include the 2008 prequel film "L: Change the World" which I haven't even seen yet. Maybe I can get that press contact's email address before the Complete Collection comes out.

RED VS BLUE: RECREATION (DVD)

Those 'Rooster Teeth' guys (who we had at a panel at Spill Dot Con this year) are pumping out one volume a month of their flagship product on DVD. It was just a little while ago they put out the remastered box set (that STILL really could use subtitles, guys) with seasons 1-5 of the hugely popular internet based 'machinima' show. They followed it immediately with "Season 6: Reconstruction" and now with "Season 7: Recreation", to be followed at the end of September with Season 8. The comedy follows the misadventures of a bunch of characters in the world of "Halo", using the actual game, up to a certain point, for the animation. Microsoft and game developer Bungie were canny enough to see what was happening here and how fans were reacting, so rather than a 'cease and desist', they chose to embrace "Red vs Blue". This ended up being good for everybody, as "Halo" got free advertising and they gratefully added functions to make it easier for the Rooster Teeth guys to get what they needed to make their episodes. Now, where's that Spill.com box set?

SHOGUN ASSASSIN (Blu-Ray/DVD)

Screw the lame "Ninja Assassin", what you WANT to see is this 1980 re-edit of the first two "Lone Wolf and Cub" Japanese films, combined into one bloody as hell movie for the American grindhouse market by, no surprise here, Roger Corman's distribution company. The story follows the disgraced former executioner under the Shogun, who wanders the countryside with his toddler in tow, dispensing insanely gory justice where needed. Blood doesn't have to necessarily look real to be fun, but it damn sure has to be present, as I'd take "Shogun Assassin"s gallons of bright plasma any day over the CG stuff. Take note "Kill Bill" fans, this is where all that awesomeness came from.

THE SIMPSONS: THE THIRTEENTH SEASON (Blu-Ray)

The DVD collections may be up to Season 20, but the HD is still playing catch-up. Season thirteen wings its way to Blu-Ray today, and I'll be honest with you...I can't remember back that far. But never fear, Leon (who gets all "The Simpsons" collections that cross my doorstep) takes the season apart for review and reveals what new surprises the Blu-Ray holds for fans. Or at least he will. Shortly. Look for it. Because it'll be up soon. *ahem*. I SAID IT'LL BE UP SOON....yeah, that should do it. So...I'm a harsh taskmaster.

Almost finished watching the Death Note anime series and I can't wait to get the live action versions on blu-ray, nice to know it has the Cyrus seal of approval now. And a Spill box set? Hell yes. I would pay for that!

Great list. Here is an interesting fact: Light's father in the film is the guy from Iron Chef. Although, I did not like the film, but the comic book is really great.

I liked the Death Note manga and anime, but I wasn't a huge fan of the live-action movie. The LOST set looks cool.

Wow... my timing was impeccable I was literally just watching the season finale of the fifth season of Lost, I'm blowing through the extras as we speak ( type?), I'll hopefully buy Season 6 soon enough... I know I know I'm a wimpy half-assed Lost fan but I shelled out some serious dough for the last five seasons and I don't even own a Blu Ray player ( or a PS3)... man would that thing look gorgeous on my shelf.

I'd like to check out Death Note, the anime is one of my favorite of all time, and I know Cyrus that Anime ain't all that welcomed 'round these parts but I've seen lots of Anime, Death Note is one of the ones that stick out from the rest of the bunch.

Shogun Assassin sounds like a must-buy, I hope a DVD version exists.
Comment by Brendan on August 24, 2010 at 8:03pm
I wonder if they will release the entire Lone Wolf and Cub series on blu-ray soon.
Comment by Conejita on August 24, 2010 at 8:02pm
Ralphie, get off the stage, sweetheart.

*adding to ragman's post* ...and then goes completely "blah" the second season.
