'Crouching Tiger' Sequel In The Works
Prepare to take flight again, as The Weinstein Company has announced they are putting into production a sequel to the 2000 martial arts epic 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.' The followup film, also based on the 'Crane-Iron Pentalogy' by Wang Du Lu, will again center on Yu Shu Lien, the character played by Michelle Yeoh in 'Crouching Tiger.' The sequel will be based on fifth book in the series, entitled 'Silver Vase, Iron Knight.' The first 'Crouching Tiger' film, directed by Ang Lee, won four Academy Awards and was nominated for another six. Reports indicate that Lee will not be returning to direct the sequel, and The Weinsteins are in talks with Ronny Yu ('Fearless') to possibly replace him. Some of the cast from the first may return, but at this point it is not known specifically who. Production is set to begin in May.
Color me uninterested. I'm not hardwired against all sequels, but I really don't understand the need for another 'Crouching Tiger' film. 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' was a globally-recognized example of Wuxia fiction, but its far from the only film to celebrate this age-old Chinese fiction style prior to 2000 or since. Typically a sequel is constructed either to continue a complex story or to capitalize on the popularity of the first movie. I think the fact that it's been thirteen years and no one has been clamoring to hear the rest of the 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' story means that Lee did a pretty decent job hitting all he points the first time; that or, alternatively, the plot was not so monumentally interesting as to warrant further exploration. Furthermore, on what are they hoping to capitalize here? If Ang Lee was directing the sequel, one could make the argument that they are harnessing the buzz from the 'Life of Pi' Oscar nods...but he's not. So despite the fact that there are scores of Wuxia films out there, and despite the fact that it's been over a dozen years since the first, The Weinsteins think people need a new 'Crouching Tiger' film from the director of 'Freddy vs. Jason?'
What do you guys think? Excited at the prospect of a 'Crouching Tiger' sequel? What do you think inspired this move from TWC?

im always up for more martial arts epics. my take is the sequel will be set in the same universe, obviously, have a few returning characters, and tell a whole new story. a sequel doesnt have to continue on one story. each sequel can tell a new story, just have a few overlapping things to keep people interested. examples? the Die Hard franchise are all separate stories, not part of one overall collective story. say what you want about its sequels, the movies are entertaining and well done. so i dont see why sequels couldnt be done this way for this series.

Its a good movie but its no Once upon a time in china. Plus Chow yun fat is not gonna be in it so who cares plus I like to think Michelle Yeoh is better than this.

How can anyone think that after all this time there is a need for another CTHD movie? Even after it first came out I saw it and got all I needed out of it. I never considered that there was a need for anything more. It was good, for its time, and it wrapped up enough to not want to know more about the world that the story was set in. Talk about backwards thinking.

I was gonna say that I wouldn't mind a sequel but the author of this article really brings some good, clear points and put it into perspective very well. No one's been clamoring for a sequel to this. Not that it isn't good, it's just not necessary. The first one did it's job well and there's no shortage of similar films out there to fill the desire for more of this stuff. Also, though there were great performances by the cast, it was Ang Lee's touch that elevated this one above the rest. To me the story to this film stood out strongly against most other similar films but since apparently they didn't start at the beginning, they didn't create enough background for me to care to follow a sequel because of the story (the first film concluded nicely).
