This is a news item I'd love to proclaim with all-out certainty, but my tried and trusted source(s) aren't sure if this is a total lock, or whether it's just someone they're seriously interested in. Either way, producers of THE HOBBIT have begun looking at casting for the dwarves (dwarfs?), and one name has emerged as a major contender: Brian Cox. He's a brilliant choice for the role: physically, he fits with the depiction of the the race in LOTR (well, Gimli), and he's a born Scotsman. Also, he could yell at Galadriel for adding narration. So there you go. If this comes to fruition, you heard it here first!

@MisterKeitel - they're trying to make The Hobbit a worthy predecessor to the LOTR trilogy, so they're adding as much to the story as they can to fully realize the prequel. They've even said that they added parts where you actually see what Gandalf does during the parts in the book where he disappears for lengths of time, because it all contributes to the main story.
Barring that, though - a standard full length script is usually anywhere from 100-130 pages long. The Hobbit is 320 pages long. I'm sure they have more than enough material from the book to pack it into two epic films. Even if you eliminated all of the descriptive passages and cut it down to strictly dialog, I think it would still be tricky to cram it into a single film. The animated Hobbit did an okay job of it, but it plays more like a greatest hits version of the story where they cut right from travel montage to big action and repeat.

I see in Imbd that the movie will be in two parts. I think that's more to milk the movie for more money. I just don't think ther's 4 hours of story to be told. Two and half is the most lenght I think this movie might need.
He's playing Thorin Okenshield.
No pint guessing it really.
Sensisble choice since i'm not really sure how old Brian Blessed is.
Great job Del Toro.

Haha Andrew and MisterKeitel, exactly what I'm thinking. I remember reading the book and thinking something along the lines of the old Hobbit cartoon movie.
