Could 'Magic Mike 2' Be Directed By Channing Tatum?

Steven Soderbergh is a phenomenal director. In addition to crafting some truly outstanding films with impressive casts, the guy managed to make a movie about male strippers interesting. It didn't take long after the release, and success, of 'Magic Mike,' for talk of a sequel to take center stage. The problem, however, is that Soderbergh long ago mentioned his intentions to retire, and the self-imposed countdown of remaining projects would not allow for a 'Magic Mike 2.' So, if Mike dances again, who would be his DJ? In a recent interview with German site Filmstarts, Channing Tatum mentioned that not only will 'Magic Mike 2' be a broader comedy, a road movie that will bring the strippers back together, but that he himself may direct. Other candidates include long-time Soderbergh assistant director Gregory Jacobs ('Wind Chill'). No final decision has yet been made.

There is a marked degree of concern one may inherently have with this story. Tatum has never directed a film, or anything for that matter, and given that the first 'Magic Mike' was a substantial hit you'd think the studio would be a little more careful about who they selected to helm the sequel. However, perhaps they are banking on the novelty of a "Channing Tatum Film" branded on the screen; further capitalizing on his fandom. I'm going to play devil's advocate here and suggest that maybe it's not such a bad idea for Tatum to direct. If Soderbergh is 100% not coming back, then why not allow the guy who's own personal experience in male exotic dancing was the basis for the first film? Will it be technically and artistically exceptional? Maybe not. But there will be a certain level of authenticity there that may make Tatum the appropriate choice.

What do you guys think? Anyone like 'Magic Mike' enough to be interested in a sequel? Does the thought of Tatum directing trouble you?

Wait? Why would it be a broader comedy, let alone the fact that there will be a sequel. From the sounds of it, I wouldn't be surprised if Channing Tatum wanted to produce a saturday morning cartoon with these characters! The beauty of the film was that it's a man's struggle between a hedonistic life style and aspiring to change his ways. One of the best things about the movie is the last scene where he's sitting with the kid's sister; it leaves the possibility of him turning a new leaf. Now he's going to go backwards and ditch the possibility of moving on with his life?! Even for a sequel, this doesn't forward the story or add substance to the original!

i'm not against the idea of him directing a sequel, i'm against the idea of there being a sequel. but if it's going to get made you may as well have the guy that used to work as a stripper and is the star to direct it.

my votes on tatum...i mean, why the fuck NOT let him direct? i'm all up for being surprised. the first only cost around 7 million to make so just double the budget and watch them make it back on opening night.

If this gets made then females no longer get to argue that there are no films that exploit men.
