If it's crap ... We'll tell you

The James Bond franchise has existed for half a century with six actors having played the iconic spy up to now. Outside of Australian vs. Welsh, or Irish vs. Scottish, there hasn't been a great deal of diversity within this group of actors. If rumors are to believed, there may be a major change on the horizon. 'Skyfall' co-star Naomie Harris let slip while promoting the film that Idris Elba ('Thor,' 'Luther') met with Bond producer Barbara Broccoli supposedly about his potentially taking on the role in the future. Here's what she said...
"I didn't realize that there was this talk and then I did a film with Idris [Elba] and he said that he met Barbara Broccoli [James Bond producer] and that it does seem like there is a possibility in the future that there could very well be a black James Bond. And I would have to vote for Idris because I just finished working with him and he's a great guy."
Hell yes! I can't tell you how excited I am at the prospect of Idris Elba playing James Bond. He's poised and dashing as Bond should be, and has already proven he is a talented performer as well as someone who can handle large-scale action sequences. However, now is the prime time for Elba to take over the Bond mantle and yet Craig still has at least two more movies on his contract after 'Skyfall.' There has been much made of the fact that "Craig can't play Bond forever;" this empty observation being the rallying cry for casting a new actor. Thing is, Elba is only four years younger than Craig, so it's really not a matter of age. The fact that Elba is black matters so little to me, my only real sticking point with Bond is that he's not played by an American. The proposed casting of Elba might also give the filmmakers the opportunity to approach James Bond as a position within MI-6 and not one singular person. This would lend new context to the entire franchise and acknowledge the fact that the character has not aged in five decades.
What do you guys think? Would Elba make a good Bond? Do you think he will immediately follow Craig?

Comment by Brinkman on October 30, 2012 at 2:15am I'm only 22 and saw Brosnan as Bond when I was young. Yet I wasn't really into Bond until Daniel Craig. That is my bias. With that said, I am not ready for Craig to pass the torch on yet. After two more movies my opinion will probably change, but as of now I don't really want to think about his replacement.
Comment by Luke Hero on October 29, 2012 at 11:01pm That last part would be a cool idea...that James Bond is not a man...but a position that has been held by different men within MI6
Comment by Jack O'mally on October 29, 2012 at 10:10pm I would be so happy if this was true
Comment by Ruben Planas on October 29, 2012 at 3:26pm I'd totally be down for idris elba as bond!

I interpreted your upper-class comment incorrectly so if you felt like that was hostile, I apologize. You're right, I'm not British, but I've spent time over there and had many enlightening discussions with the locals about the way things work. It's a lovely place and I was very sad to hear about the riots (I wasn't over there at the time). I'm well-aware that the Bond character was created in a time where minorities were in a bad spot. But the great thing about the Bond series is that it adapts to our time (Goldeneye did this with the Cold War, for example) and doesn't have a linear narrative. Honestly, I'm really rooting for Idris Elba or, to a lesser extent, Michael Fassbender to get the role.

I think maybe you have to be British to understand fully what I'm saying (ur profile says ur from U.S.), especially regarding my "ridiculous upper-class statement," British society is incredibly dominated by Class Politics, and race plays a part in that to this day still - u should have seen how much class/race were discussed following the UK Riots over here last year. I'm not saying it's impossible to concieve of a black Bond, I'm just saying if you really know the character and understood the society that created him, you would realise how extremely unlikely it would be.
@MahMahAfro
Virtually nothing you said makes a good case for Bond strictly being a white character. Suave, self-important, snobbish? Those are not traits of race. And I don't even want to touch your ridiculous upper-class statement. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and just assume you worded that poorly...
@ThomFlorio
Race is inherent to everything about Shaft; that comparison doesn't work. Race isn't inherent to Bond. This is the same fallacy people brought up with the Spider-Man thing.

Comment by MahMahAfro on October 28, 2012 at 12:56pm Whenever I hear the idea of a black bond (and this isn't the first time we've heard such rumours) my knee-jerk reaction is always a big fat no, though I'm never too sure why. I think having read some of the books explains it - it's important to remember Bond isn't just a cool action hero, he's a self important dick with a huge superiority complex, specificly that the British are better than everyone else, and though nowadays 'British' includes all colours and creeds, Bond being white it's still a major factor in what makes him the stuck up snob he is at heart. In the books Bond is straight up racist at times, and though they've done a lot to modernise the character I just can't see him being the same opinionated upper-class git and being black aswell, unless they make him a tough-guy version of Carlton from Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
Also, as others have said, he's just too old. Maybe the talks where about him being the next Bond villain, which I think is a much better idea.
Only if we can get Rob Schneider to play John Shaft.
