Confirmed: Dwayne Johnson Is Brett Ratner's Hercules

Not too long ago, it was reported that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was in negotiations to play Hercules in Brett Ratner's 'Hercules: The Thracian War.' Well it seems as if The Rock laid the smack down on those negotiations because it has now been confirmed that the former WWE superstar will take on the role of the mythic hero for MGM. 'Hercules: The Thracian War' is based on a graphic novel by Steve Moore and will be penned for the screen by Ryan Condol. The film is apparently set to begin production in October in New Zealand. Hopefully The Rock will not have to trample any hobbits while shooting.

As I had mentioned when we relayed the story of his negotiations, I think The Rock will make a great Hercules both in terms of his size and natural screen charisma. My doubts about Brett Ratner as a director remain so I can't get too excited about this just yet. I am however excited about his other recently announced project, which is an action thriller called 'Ciudad.' The film, which will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, is the story of a mercenary hired by a drug kingpin to rescue his kidnapped daughter and is set in the slums of Brazil. 'Ciudad,' like 'Hercules: The Thracian War,' is also based on a comic book, but in this case one that was written by the Russo Brothers themselves and has yet to be released. I'm envisioning a gritty, more action-packed version of Fernando Meirelles' 'City of God' with The Rock wreaking havoc and visiting destruction upon an entire criminal compound in the middle of the slums. Uh, yes please. And sure, it is a bit distressing that the Russo Brothers' last film was 2006's 'You, Me, & Dupree,' but they've also worked on 'Community' and 'Arrested Development' so that inspires at least a measure of confidence. It'll be interesting to see how they tackle this darker material.

What do you guys think? Are you guys excited for The Rock as Hercules? Thoughts on 'Ciudad?'

Would be excited for this if it wasn't for that A-hole who f-ed up the 3rd x-men movie (and so many more). Still if it's a simple script and the CGI isn't WAY to over the top (Clash of the Titans remake) then Ratner might not even have a chance to fuck it up...and if he does...well it seems like Bret is burning bridges in hollywood left and right so a fail here could inch him a little closer to being out the door...always a silver lining...

As long as he is as scary as he was in the fast 5 I'm in

So it's going to be like the Hercules TV show then? But less funny...

Fingers crossed for the loin cloth version of Hercules.....

At least it's not a remake/sequel... well...

@Topless: Sure it is, but add slums of Brazil and grittiness, and subtract Stifler and low-brow comedy. Completely different film, basically.
