If it's crap ... We'll tell you

gambolingman posted a statusThis year's big screen adaptation of DC's 'The Green Lantern' was...less than stellar. One of my biggest problems with it was the design of the villain Parallax. He honestly looked like an intergalactic version of the excrement demon from 'Dogma.' But now, artist Peter Rubin, who handled the character design for the film, has shared some of his concept art revealing his other potential looks for Parallax. I think my favorite is the purple-colored drawing of a Parallax comprised of multiple disembodied faces; just plain creepy. Take a look below and tell us what you think.

Comment by The Dude Smith on January 2, 2012 at 10:20pm What was wrong with the giant bug/parasite? I think that bugs are scarier than clouds. The movie version didn't have to look exactly like the comic version, just similar. Some kind of giant bug thing with a creepy voice would have done it. They have so many creative minds and so much technology now that making a cool looking Parallax similar to the comics isn't hard at all.
Personally I think the movie should have been longer, and not try to cram Parallax AND Hector Hammond in. I think they just should have built up what Parallax was in the beginning, and than go to Hal, get his origin and everything done, show him train longer, meet more Green Lanterns, and establish his relationship with Sinestro. The should have also slowly built up Sinestro, and his thinking that fear is greater than will. Just give hints of whats going to happen to him, and set up for the next film which would be the Sinestro Corps war. Than get Hal back on earth, and later fight Parallax.
Wow, I kinda got off topic there, but still, that's what I think they should have done in the film.

But those were both addressed within the film. That was part of his character arc. Even Hector Hammond takes note of it "All it took for you to grow up was the end of the world". Infact, I'd say fighting Parallax at the end is what redeems him. He's learned his lesson, now he's fighting the great evil.
As for the guardians letting him go off. They DID say that one world being sacrifised so to give them time to forge the yellow ring was a necessary thing. They refused to help him, so he was like "well, screw it, I'm doing it on my own".
But all this considered, those don't seem like things that would inspire utter hatred towards a film. Hell, I look at Thor utterly stupefied by how bad it is. It was terrible film-making all around. But the only reason I really hate Thor is because it recieves such lavish praise. That's something I find unarguable, Thor IS a terribly made movie. If you like Thor: awesome. But I can't remotely agree that it's good.
Green Lantern I'll admit wasn't the best superhero movie last year, and definitely isn't anywhere near the alltime greats... But it wasn't bad or anything. It was just affable and ephemeral.
I can understand if people were underwhelmed by it. But the utter lividity in which people talk about it is an enigma to me. Especially since Thor came out the same year.
I think this is another reason I really dig how honest the Spill Crew is. They are they only critics that more often than not have been completely solid with how they feel about movies. I became a fan after hearing their review for "The Dark Knight" because, damn, they were mentioning things that I was saying that no one else was (Not a kids movie, Aaron Eckhart was just as good as Ledger). Even the recent disdain for "The Muppets" impressed me as they were the ONLY people I've heard dislike the film, which was pretty fucking bad. Even in their Green Lantern review they describe feeling underwhelmed. Going as far as saying 'Yeah, there was nothing here that made me love or hate it. It left me feeling in different, which I don't like because it's Green Lantern and I therefore should love it".
Good, that's understandable and I completely see your perspective there. It's not "bullshit", you were just underwhelemed which in and of itself was disappointing.
Sorry, I just had to get my admiration for the Spill Crew out at the end there. My lips are pretty chapped now.
The thing about the GL universe and what "fear" looks like is..... Fear is an emotion emotions are abstract they don't look like anything. There was a contestant on deal or no deal. Big black dude. He was afraid of Big Bird. Is Big Bird what fear looks like? I like the cloud because fear is different for everyone. It taps something primal in us. If you've ever watched a dust storm roll in. Scary stuff there. Ever seen a Haboob blow in.

I think a lot of the dislike stems from the fact that when times got rough the hero ran, the corps decided that the rookie lantern should take on a lifeform that has already killed many of their more experienced members by himself and a lot of other quirks that just made the film experience less than enjoyable and boring. Maybe they'll fix these flaws if a sequel comes but I highly doubt it, which is a shame too I like RR and most of the cast.
