Cobie Smulders - who you may know from the CBS comedy 'How I Met Your Mother' - is currently in final negotiations with Marvel Studios for a role in the upcoming 'Avengers' film as part of an estimated 9-picture deal. Beating out a handful of other actresses for the part, Smulders will likely play Maria Hill, agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Nick Fury's second-in-command.
The deal marks Smulder's first major film role, as well as the first film appearance of the character. Maria Hill - for those of us in the "non-funnybook" set - is a major character in the Marvel Universe, eventually taking over S.H.I.E.L.D. from Nick Fury, attempting to arrest Captain America during the infamous 'Civil War' crossover event, and even hooking up with Tony Stark (but seriously... who in the Marvel Universe hasn't slept with Tony Stark at this point?).
With the deal, it's assumed that in addition to being in all three Avengers films, she will also play smaller roles in the upcoming Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor sequels. Directed by Joss Whedon and produced by Disney and Marvel Films, 'The Avengers' is set to be released May 4th, 2012 and will star Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johannsson, and Samuel L. Jackson.

Comment by Happy Birthday Roboto on February 9, 2011 at 7:19am Guys just wanted to point out that just because the deal says nine pictures that doesn't necessarily mean all nine will get made, if the first one flops they might pull out of the second and so on. The deal just means that if the films warrant sequels she should be there for them. This is simillar to Daniel Craig's four Bond movie deal.
One example of where a multi-picture deal actually was a multi-picture deal was the Lord of the Rings movies where one film would have been kind of useless without the other two so before starting work on the first they had to question whether or not they were willing to commit to all three.
I hope the movies are good and successful but if they do screw up Disney and Marvel will pull out of doing anymore.

@TwelfthDoctor @Nshan - Nine pictures means that she's contractually obligated to appear in nine films for the studio. Like the last paragraph says, she'll probably be in all 3 Avengers films and then have smaller roles in all the other Iron Man, Cap, and Thor sequels. There are also rumors about a S.H.I.E.L.D. movie, so she'd probably be in that as well.
This is what Marvel is doing now - they're finding actors who are willing to work for little pay over a long period of time and multiple films. They couldn't find anyone to commit to being Cap until Chris Evans agreed to work for cheap (although his agent managed to get his commitment down to 6 films during negotiations, not 9).
