In 2009, Sony Pictures proved Pixar wasn't the only studio capable of animated greatness. 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs' took a popular children's book and turned it into a clever, heart-warming movie with plenty of material to appeal to the grownups in the audience as well. Earning over $243 million worldwide, it was a cinch that we'd be getting a sequel. Last December, it was announced that Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn would be taking over directing duties from the original's Phil Lord and Chris Miller. We still weren't sure, however, which members of 'Cloudy's expansive cast would be returning and who might be added for the sequel. The forecast has changed a bit. News has just broken that not only are Bill Hader, Anna Faris, and Andy Samberg expected to reprise their roles in part two, but the production has also added Kirsten Schaal ('Flight of the Conchords,' '30 Rock'). The sole detail that has been released about her character is that she is an orangutan. In addition, a few plot details have been revealed. Apparently 'Cloudy 2' will see Flint Lockwood and his friends forced to return to Swallow Falls when sentient food monsters threaten the safety of the entire world. 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2' is shooting for a February 7, 2014 release date.
I've said this before, but I can't wait to see the 'Cloudy' sequel. The first was such a great movie and a phenomenal surprise, and I am incredibly intrigued by the concept of adding food monsters to the equation; so many jokes about who's eating who. I hope the bit about Hader, Faris, and Samberg is at least mostly set in stone, but that barely scratches the surface of 'Cloudy's overwhelmingly awesome cast. What about James Caan? Neil Patrick Harris? Mr. T?! In any event, I think Schaal is a great addition to the roster. Not only is she a funny lady in general, but she's proven her exceptional voice acting skills on the underrated Fox animated series 'Bob's Burgers.' My guess is that the orangutan she's playing is a character created to serve as a compliment to Steve the talking monkey (voiced by NPH). The only thing that has me a bit uneasy is the departure of Phil Lord and Chris Miller. I love 'Clone High,' the series they worked on before 'Cloudy,' and '21 Jump Street' was another surprise win. Hopefully Cameron and Pearn will be able to gather that same lightning for a second strike.
What do you guys think? Do you like the plot concept for 'Cloudy 2?' Is Schaal a wise addition?

Comment by Joseph E T Hughes on June 26, 2012 at 10:14am Yeah, I was actually joking about the fact that at the time, there was no "million" in the article, so it read like it only made $243 dollars. But yeah, no, Cloudy was an awesome and deserving success market-wise.
Comment by Nicholas Collier on June 26, 2012 at 2:50am This sounds like the studio wants to develop characters in easy and predictable ways by...
.... CREATING A LOVE INTEREST FOR THE MONKEY?
No offense, but that sounds really cheesy and dumb.
Comment by Madman Blue on June 26, 2012 at 12:28am @Joseph Hughes:
Cloudy was made for about $100 mil, A lot of money, yes, but it more then made its money back, not even counting the DVD sales, which I assume would be high for a movie like that. John Carter cost somewhere in the $250 mil range... plus an overly bloated marketing budget, so it's not really the same thing.

Comment by GorTheMovieGod on June 25, 2012 at 8:15pm HOW ABOUT BRUCE CAMPBELL!?!?! He was great in the original as well. Hope we see him return!
Comment by Composite Who Horrible on June 25, 2012 at 2:07pm Could it be that she is NPH's replacement??? Or if it is announced that NPH is in the film later I bet she's a love interest.
Comment by Hector Fernando Andrade JR. II on June 25, 2012 at 1:52pm Kristen Schaal is a nice addition and the plot of this movie sounds great.
I'm looking forward to seeing this movie in 3D.
Comment by Joseph E T Hughes on June 25, 2012 at 1:49pm Somehow I don't think it only made $243 dollars, or else nobody would be giving John Carter so much shit.
But seriously, that's a pretty good cast, I hope they get the rest of them back.
