At this year's CinemaCon (formerly ShoWest) - the official convention National Association of Theater Owners (NATO) - Disney showered the audience with footage and news on some upcoming films:
Jason Segel and Amy Adams presented footage for their film 'The Muppets'. During the presentation, Segel (who co-wrote, produced, and stars in the film) expressed his childhood love of the Muppets as well as revealing the iconic Henson puppets as his first comedic influence. The film will follow Segel and his Muppet roommate Walter as they attempt to reunite the rest of the once-famous Muppets who are now scattered across the world (Fozzy Bear is working in Reno, singing old Muppet songs while Miss Piggy is enjoying her time in Paris, etc).
The film is said to be similar in tone to their recent (and extremely popular) YouTube series.
Also during Disney's presentation, they revealed that the sequel to their 2001 hit 'Monsters Inc.' will actually be a prequel titled 'Monsters University' and will tell the story of Mike and Sully in their early college days as they meet and form their friendship. Both John Goodman and Billy Crystal will be returning to reprise their roles, as well as Steve Buscemi, which means we will be seeing the chameleon-like Randall as well. This puts to bed multiple rumors that the sequel would revolve around an older Boo (including her supposed "cameo" in 'Toy Story 3'), or that it would be about Mike and Sully being trapped in the human world. Although, with Disney/Pixar's new focus on sequels to it's beloved properties, there's still a chance we may see either or both in future installments.

Comment by PoisonPirate on April 1, 2011 at 1:35am I'm looking forward to Monsters Inc 2. Even if it is a prequel, it is Pixar. They'll probably produce one of the few good prequels ever. I saw Monsters Inc for my 10th birthday so I've been looking forward to this for a while.
As for Muppets: YES! Looking forward to that too! Jason Segel? Cool! Much like him, loved them growing up. I wonder what "Old Muppet songs" Fozzy will sing. Did someone say Moving Right Along?

Comment by SomeBritishDude on March 31, 2011 at 5:43am Never was huge into the muppets, before my time really, but love their Youtube vids so this should be good.
If anyone can do a good prequel, Pixar can. I'm not sure about all these sequels and prequels they're doing right now rather than new IPs but they'll still be good.
...Well, maybe not cars.

Just because a lot of prequels have been bad that doesn't mean all prequels ever will be bad, the idea of a prequel is still sound.
Comment by The Dubya on March 30, 2011 at 7:17pm Eh, I wasn't all that crazy about Monsters Inc., so I'm pretty indifferent about the whole prequel...

As for the Muppets...well, they're just fucking awesome. I'm SO glad they've been able to stand the test of time and adapt to today's culture to still be as funny as ever. Unlike Pixar, they can do no wrong! HAW HAW HAWWW!
