Christopher Nolan Not Directing Justice League Movie

This month, after what seemed an eternity of waiting, Christopher Nolan's final foray into the world of Batman'The Dark Knight Rises,' hits theaters. It seems common knowledge at this point that Nolan will not be helming the next Bats movie for Warner Brothers, but what of this Justice League situation? It was reported early last month that things were still moving on the massive DC equivalent to 'The Avengers,' but then again the "progress" cited was that a writer was hired to write the script...a year ago. Hardly Earth-shattering news, but it did get the rumor mills buzzing about the prospect of Nolan coming back to direct 'JL.' It was merely a glimmer of hope, but one that got many people excited. Sorry to dash those pipe dreams guys, but the director himself confirmed that he would not be involved whatsoever. Here's what he said during a 'TDKR' junket...

"I've got no plans to do anything more, and certainly, no involvement with any Justice League project,"

Do filmmakers and actors always tell the truth during interviews and junkets? No. However, I find it remarkably hard to believe Nolan is just being coy. Frankly, I hadn't even considered the possibility of his directing 'Justice League,' and I'm not sure why anyone else did either. We are still years away from 'Justice League,' with several characters still in need of their own solo outing before it can become a reality. Nolan is going to be long departed from the Batman franchise before this project really gets in motion so we'll probably have had a reboot at the hands of someone else before that date. So why would they then bring Nolan back to direct a team that included Batman?

Ok, so now that Nolan has made it official that he's out, who would you pick as 'The Justice League' director?

Honestly, they need to skip the solo movies and go straight into a Justice League movie. Solo movies can come after. Of course they can continue with Man of Steel and maybe a Batman reboot but there's no need to try and establish a bunch of other characters first. Marvel's way isn't the only way to do it.

@Phillip De Paolo

The animated series isn't flawless either, even though I love it. The more I think about it, the more I am kind of glad that he isn't directing the movie. He would be able to nail it (like the Jesus in your profile picture) but there are other things I'd rather see him do. I'm a huge Batman fan, but in all honesty I would be shocked if anyone is able to capture Batman in the way that Nolan has after Rises.

I'm VERY glad Nolan isn't directing a Justice League film! It's not that he wouldn't knock the movie out of the park, but rather because I want him to do something else. His Dark Knight Legend has really taken the most compelling aspects of the comic book characters and packaged them in a plausible Gotham that emphasizes psychology and realism as motivation. I think Nolan raised the bar on a new, very 21st century genre of comic book film: the plausible superhero in a realistic environment (i.e. Iron Man and Batman Begins/ The Dark Knight). If there is a JL film it will incorporate characters that would clash disastrously with Nolan's interpretation of Batman; I just can't see the Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, Hawkman, or Green Lantern hanging out with Nolan's Caped Crusader! Hell, Nolan didn't even want to touch the character of Robin, who is WAYYYYYYY more realistic than those aforementioned heroes!

Bottomline: there are already plans for another Batman reboot that would be geared for JL, and I expect DC will try to get its shit together and bandwagon on the success of The Avengers by booting and rebooting its core Leaguers. I never expected Nolan to direct or have anything to do with another Batman movie after The Dark Knight Rises, and I hope he leaves it at that! I expect his vision of Batman to kick the shit out of any film incarnations to come.
*Lastly (and I hate to do this) @Philip De Paolo SweetTea Jesus --> Nolan is the man, and if you've got a problem with his films or his take on the Dark Knight why don't you go watch Joel Schumacher's Batman and Robin, since that's probably geared more toward your level of taste.

Oh, Josh Whedon, huh? I wonder why people want him to direct a JL movie? Ha ha ha. DC already told him to fuck off when he tried to make a Wonder Woman movie for them. And Marvel snatched him up. Warner Brothers lost their shot with him. Now the man is probably busy working on the next Avengers' movie. Disney probably locked him down in a contract and/or is paying him boo-coo bucks for the next installment. He can't do both Avengers and The Justice League. Even if there is no contract with Disney, it'd be unprofessional and too much work two moives for rival companies that closely together.

Bryan Singer had to choose: X-Men 3 or Superman Returns. James Marsden had to make the same choice as an actor. (BTW, nice move guys).

Anyway, Joss Whedon would have been perfect for the bwa-ha-ha Justice League, but alas, it probably ain't to be. And the likelihood that DC will get the perfect director, actors and script combination to do a good JLA movie is nil. Good luck with that, Warner Brothers. Either way a Justice League movie will clean up at the box office...in the first week.

I love how many people assume that any character in the Justice League besides Superman, is going to get their own lead-in movie before a Justice League movie. How about the possibility that a Justice League movie is done five or more years from now, starring one or none of the actors who previously played any of the superheroes, and a whole new take that has nothing to do with any previous DC movies? Just because Marvel did it a certain way doesn't mean DC/Warner brothers has to.
