Fans of NBC's 'Community' are probably well-acquainted with the tension that frequently cropped up behind the scenes. This tension usually boiled down to the temperamental Chevy Chase, who plays the curmudgeonly Pierce Hawthorne, and his constant issues with show creator Dan Harmon. Chase made no secret of his distaste for the writing and jokes; often storming off set or just flat out refusing to take part in certain gags. When 'Community' was scheduled to return to the airwaves, sans Mark Harmon, many wondered if these problems had been solved. However it appears Chase's dissatisfaction with 'Community' could not be quelled by Harmon's departure. It has been announced that, effective immediately, Chase will also be exiting. This was said to be a mutual agreement between the actor and the show's executives. 'Community's fourth season is mostly shot, with only one or two episodes to go, though when these completed episodes will air seems to keep changing. As it stands, season four arrives February 7th.

That sound you're hearing is not one person on this planet being surprised by this news. Chase's relationship with Harmon, his open, bilious frustration with the show and with his character, and his constant temper tantrums instantly slapped a ticking clock on his run on the show. I gotta say I did let myself believe that Harmon's firing, after leaving that not-so-tactful angry voicemail on Chase's phone, might calm things down a bit. And indeed, they were able to get Chase to do the majority of the fourth season. But it's not as if I ever fooled myself into thinking that everything was copacetic now, I mean we are still talking about Chase's ego, right? He was so great in the 80s, in all those classic comedies that made him a legend, but even as a 'Community' fan I can't say I'm going to miss him. His character was always such a drag for me and I don't think they're going to have a hard time filling that spot at the study table. Is it too much to hope that another 80s legend might step in? Did someone say Dan Aykroyd?

What do you guys think? Are you upset Chase is leaving? Do you think he means it this time? Who might you chose as a replacement for Pierce?

Mark Harmon? was that a typo or joke?

I do feel sad that Chevy's leaving, but with these kinds of frustrations, I can understand. However, I wouldn't want a new actor to play Pierce, because it wouldn't have the same feel that Chase gave it. Just wouldn't be the same.

I like Chase as a comedian, but man his character sucked so you as far as his distaste for his character is concerned you can't blame him. His character always brought the show down in my eyes. So if they get a new actor, definitely change the character.

Quick idea, how bout just replace Chevy Chase with another actor (but still playing the same character) and make an episode all around the fact that Abed is the only one seeing the difference ;) .

@THR You make this whole thing with Chevy leaving the show as a fairly one sided situation. That Chevy was too much of an ego-maniac to take any kind of direction, but the reality is Harmon was infamous for being a Class-A Asshole! The show had become “rats leaving a sinking ship” with all the writers and staff leaving after the third season.

I think that best way to find out who was the biggest dick (Chevy vs Harmon) is to look at who was fired and who left of his own accord?  Maybe Chevy was too old and rich to take Harmon’s shit, while the rest of the younger crew had to kiss his ass for the sanctity of their careers? Just a thought! :)

Anyone saying Pierce Hawthorne was not a big part of community is fucking crazy. He was central to so many of the episodes and i thought he was great. Community keeps getting push back and some say the fourth will be the final season so maybe it was a i quit before we get canceled situation in Chevys head either way it was a dick move. I'am still gona miss him thou.

Wow, he couldn't even finish the season (and probably the whole series) off. What a douche.

I always liked Pierce Hawthorne, and I'm not even a very big Chevy Chase fan, so it's not as if it's out of nostalgia. What I thought was really annoying was how the writers established him a certain way very early on in season one and then abandoned that characterization, and ultimately stopped doing interesting things with him (albeit, probably because they got annoyed with Chevy Chase - I don't know). The video game episode in season 3 was a nice reminder of the storytelling potential in the character.

But then, I like Chang too.
