When Columbia pictures greenlit '21 Jump Street,' they were taking a gamble. Sure, Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are considerable box office draws, but a movie based on a cheese-covered, long forgotten 80s teen cop drama? Few people were under the impression that this was a wise move. However, thanks in no small part to the writing of Michael Bacall and Jonah Hill and the direction of Phil Lord and Chris Miller ('Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs'), the movie was a hilarious, self-aware gem that brought out the best in everyone involved and banked an impressive $138 million. Ice Cube's last line in the film about Tatum and Hill's characters going to college paved the way for a sequel, but was it just a joke? According to Tatum's Twitter, maybe not. When asked by a fan if he agreed that there should be a '21 Jump Street' sequel, he responded that he and Jonah were currently working on it.
The unfortunate thing about Hollywood is that "working on it" does not necessarily indicate a sure thing. There are several different stages in which this project could currently find itself, and even if there is a completed script, it doesn't mean the studio will necessarily give it the go-ahead. Would I like to see a sequel? Sure. However I think getting Lord and Miller back to direct would be a make-or-break aspect. These guys are so good at taking a property that should not be adapted into film, and turning it into something that exceeds its paltry potential. What was essentially a picture book for children, in their hands became one of my all time favorite animated films, and '21 Jump Street' remains one of my favorite movies I've seen this year. That's not to marginalize the writing on the first 'Jump Street,' Hill and Bacall did a phenomenal job, but I know at least Hill is already on board for the next in both acting and writing capacities so no need to speculate on that.
What do you guys think? Do you think we'll actually see a '21 Jump Street' sequel? Would you want one?

Comment by AndrewWILLSONThe ShogunOfAustin on July 6, 2012 at 11:53am Yeah I like to see what would happen if they went undercover at a college, could be another dumb fun movie :)
Comment by Arika on July 6, 2012 at 11:38am As long as they don't do pull a Hangover 2 and repeat the exact same movie, I would watch it. I loved 21 Jump Street! But not every gem needs a sequel so it's not really necessary.
I was shocked at how much I absolutely loved this movie. If they do a sequel, I just hope that they bring back the same writers and director. I'd be 100% for it if they did.
Comment by Bachattacks! on July 6, 2012 at 9:45am I kinda want a sequel. I loved this movie.
Comment by The Fresh Prince on July 6, 2012 at 9:39am I'd like to see a sequel because I think it'd still be enjoyable and funny but I wish that some movies could just be a movie and not have a million sequels latched onto it.
Comment by CrackedVersion2.0 on July 6, 2012 at 5:02am As long as they don't recycle stuff..... I'll be happy...
