C.H. Overreacts to the "Hitman Absolution" trailer...

For those of you who haven't seen the new trailer for Hitman Absolution, go ahead. Take a gander.

Watched it? It's a trailer where Agent 47 (The protagonist of the Hitman games) enters into a building, takes out several guards, and confronts a woman in the shower.

What I'm going to say next is going to make some people scoff, some people get angry, and some people think that I'm looking too deep into the trailer, but screw it. I've already started writing and I won't feel better until I get this off my chest. While the trailer portrays Agent 47 efficiently taking out the armed guards in the building, the other side of the duel narrative just shows the woman in the shower (a character that's probably going to play a larger role in the actual game). What strikes me as childish in the trailer is that the entire portion of the woman's story in the trailer is her just showering. That's it. With loving slow-mo shots of her in the shower with an eerie glow-effect that would only be appropriate for a close-up of a romantic female lead in a 1950's film. I have already posted this concern on another video game centered website, with the knowing threat of being called a queer for not enjoying the scene looming over my head like a guillotine that I knowingly place my neck under. Fortunately, I was ecstatic when the responses I received were quite different than what I expected. Some claimed that it was for 'artistic purposes' and that it expressed her 'vulnerability.'

Those explanations would have been satisfactory had it not been for the fact that's all she's doing. Agent 47 goes through several actions in the attempt to breaking and entering in the building, but all the woman does is just wash her body. It wouldn't have been a problem if she was also reading a book, drinking wine, or watching TV along with the shower scene to make it seem like she didn't have a care in the world. But no. There are just scenes of slow-motion as she's washing her body. This focus on just having tantalizing nudity in a trailer to raise attention seems juvenile at best and pandering at worst. I know I sound like I'm complaining more than I should, but it seems to me that if we demand respect for our medium then we should start by having our products be just a little bit more mature. I'm still looking forward to Hitman Absolution and think nothing less of the game, but it's just this tiny niggling nuisance at the back of my thoughts that I just wanted to address.

Please don't kill me, Hitman fans.

Fair points, but we don't know whether this character (the woman) is going to be a big part in the game at all. She could just be an early victim? I don't know. It just seems like too deep of a first look into a teaser trailer.

@Jon - I didn't have a problem with her in the shower at all. It was definitely an interesting scene juxtaposing the menacing nature of Agent 47 with the unassuming nature of the woman in the shower. I just wished they expanded that idea a little bit more.

Man, what is with people overreacting to trailers lately?

However, you are an intelligent Spillio and have worked to explain your point quite well, unlike some people, I forgive you for overreacting.

As bad as it sounds, sex sells.  It may not be a good thing, but it's a thing nonetheless.  Having not played any Hitman games (though I really want to), I can tell that they take at least some inspiration from classic James Bond films.   And a big part of the Bond movies to this day are the sexy Bond girls.

Something tells me that this girl in the shower is more than just a tantalizing pair of boobies story-wise. So I don't think you should be worried about her being showering in the trailer.  Nude scenes can be just as artistic as they can be raunchy, so I wouldn't worry too much just yet.

@Muffin-of-doom - While I'm sad that they aren't incorporating Jesper Kyd (love his music) and David Bateson, I'm not crying out for the resignation of the CEO of IO. You didn't offend me at all. I'm not saying the game is lesser (in fact, I'm more excited for this game than any previous incarnations). I'm just saying that it's a part of a teaser trailer from competant developers that seems rather simple-minded.

@artastrophe - Thanks for your input! I'm always happy to hear other opinions and thoughts on the subject. Don't worry, the "straight female" disclaimer tag isn't necessary :P

I have to admit I got a little concerned there for a second (read your post before I watched it), but I wouldn't worry about it too much, man! I thought it was tastefully done; it seemed to provide a nice contrast to the fast-paced bloody action sequence and emphasize her obliviousness (making the ending more dramatic), as well as giving them a chance to show off their graphics. Maybe a little over-dramatic, sure, but I didn't find the nudity offensive or too blatant or anything.

Not sure if I need a "straight female" disclaimer tag on here to lend me any credibility? xD I'm still super-excited for this game--WOOO we got to see an action sequence!!

(Fan of Blood Money, will try not rip head off)

I mean no offense CH, but you are overreacting. But at least you're not like the fans on the Hitman forums. Many of them have already cried RUINED FOREVER just because of some changes that IO is doing (Instinct mode, lack of Jesper Kyd and David Bateson, etc).

In fact, this is what I hate about all of gaming. Not the games themselves but their fans: Whenever a devolper or publisher decides to do something different with a franchise, it means they "sold out", they have "dumbed it down". NO. Shut the fuck up and wait for the fucking to come out. Quit making damn stupid assumptions and wait for the fucking thing to come out and judge for yourself.

Sorry if I've offeneded you in any manner.
