Let the games...continue. 'Catching Fire,' the second installment of 'The Hunger Games' movie franchise based on the books by Suzanne Collins, is currently casting for book two's characters. Obviously Jennifer Lawrence will be returning as Katniss, but recently another warrior-like brunette was added to the fray. Actress/model Zoe Aggeliki is leading the pack in contention for the role of Johanna Mason; apparently edging out 'Sucker Punch's Jena Malone. Who's Johanna Mason, you ask? Here's a description...
"Johanna Mason is the female victor of an unidentified Games from District 7. She also gets reaped for the third Quarter Quell. She was one of the youngest tributes in the Quarter Quell. She is the last living female victor of District 7, whose principal industry is lumber. It is hinted in Catching Fire that all of Johanna's loved ones were killed by President Snow and the Capitol after her Games"
Katniss herself even describes Johanna as possessing a "wicked ability to murder." So she's an axe-wielding former champ with a knack for hacking and a big chip on her shoulder? Sounds like an intriguing character to me. I'll admit that I haven't read these books yet, but I like what I'm hearing about Johanna Mason. As to the casting, I'm sort of at a loss. There's no denying Aggeliki is a pretty face, but no one has seen her in anything yet. She's lined up to be in 'R.I.P.D.,' an action comedy about undead police officers that sounds at least partially inspired by 'Dead Heat,' but it's impossible for me to comment on her acting abilities. My hope is that she wasn't just chosen for her looks, as 'The Hunger Games' gave us characters so much stronger and more fascinating than they were just pretty. Obviously I need my more well-read Spillios to help me out here.
What do you think of this casting choice? Is the studio gambling too much on untested talent? How much impact will this character have on the events of 'Catching Fire?'

Comment by Mr.Belding on July 5, 2012 at 4:25pm Oh yeah. Awesome. Let's get some model nobody to be a strong badass female character. I LOVE YOUR DECISIONS, HOLLYWOOD.
I'm sure she's being picked for her talent.

Comment by Mister Steel on July 3, 2012 at 10:28am I haven't really been paying much attention to the news for this movie. Does it look like there's any chance this one won't suck?
Comment by Christian Bergman Jr. on July 3, 2012 at 7:24am Can't see her face, man
Comment by Miracleman on July 2, 2012 at 11:24pm Well, the actress looks like she's that sort of mix between a preppy white girl and an exotic dancer. Jessica Albanian, as I like to call it. I mean, Johanna isn't THAT major a character in the second book, so I'm not super concerned with her talent, but hey.
Comment by Timmy Cupcakes on July 2, 2012 at 11:00pm She gets naked in the movie right? RIGHT?
Comment by Etienne D'août on July 2, 2012 at 10:17pm I don't understand the appeal.
Comment by Al Luo on July 2, 2012 at 5:16pm the hunger games books do not suck. It is fairly straightforward and not very complex, which I think is something more people today should learn to be. It is as much fodder for teenage girls as Ender's Game is for teenage boys, although I suppose there can be a point made for that.
Comment by Jigaboo Banzai on July 2, 2012 at 5:02pm hunger games books suck...shit is prety much just fodder for teenage girls.
Comment by Gregory Alford on July 2, 2012 at 3:59pm I haven't read none of the Books so I don't know how she plays into this story.
