Well, it looks like Disney got their way. As we reported previously, the studio has been locked in an ongoing feud with 'Oz, the Great and Powerful' director Sam Raimi over who to cast as Glinda, the good witch. Today, reports are coming in that Michelle Williams (the studio's choice) has been officially cast in the role, with plans to begin filming in July. There has been no comment from Raimi - who wanted Hilary Swank for the role - on the decision or whether it was reached amicably or not. However, Raimi has a sour history with studios pushing their creative decisions on his films (like Sony requiring him to include Venom into Spider-Man 3), and one has to wonder whether this will affect the final film in any way.
Disney has also announced that 'The Social Network' actor Armie Hammer has been officially cast as the title character in the upcoming Jerry Bruckheimer tentpole 'The Lone Ranger'. Hammer has been in contention for the role for weeks now, and finally joins the film alongside Johnny Depp's Tonto and director Gore Verbinski in the director's chair. Written by Justin Haythe, the film expects to begin shooting sometime in the fall, once Hammer is done with Relativity Media's 'The Brothers Grimm: Snow White' and Depp is done with Tim Burton's 'Dark Shadows'.
Last, but not least, Australian actor Joel Edgerton has joined the cast of Baz Luhrmann's 'The Great Gatsby', filling the role of philanderer Tom Buchanan. Buchanan is the husband to Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan), the erstwhile love interest for Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) and was previously set to be played by Ben Affleck (who had to leave the project due to scheduling issues). The bulked-up Edgerton, who can be seen alongside Tom Hardy in the upcoming film 'Warrior', seems a proper fit for the role, described as 'one of the most powerful ends that ever played football at New Haven'.

You know...I can see it.
Of all these films, Lone Ranger worries me the most. While I do like Depp, casting him as Tonto is just WRONG. Whitewashing characters these days DOES NOT WORK! It's also going to take a lot to get this off the ground, so...why Depp as Tonto?
As for Oz...yeah, I'm with the Monkey-boy on this one. As much as I understand how Raimi feels about studios pressuring directors into making decisions they don't want to make, you still have to do the job. If you can't do it, MOVE ON and let someone else try. Doing it and then whining afterward IF it doesn't work makes you the loser and not the studio.

You're not wrong!
But why the lack of love for Raimi!
Comment by MuttonChop Cartoons on May 18, 2011 at 3:28pm They are never going to be able to remake the Wizard of Oz even if they slap a different title on it or even with a simple remake of the same story and or prequel. It was made for its time capturing every aspect of the thirties. Raimi had made a good choice with Hilary Swank because of her acting ability but you know Disney won't care because she has a horse face too them. Disney just wants images of beauty that they can sell to the little girls who see this film, they don't care if the actress can act just as long as they get their money.
With the Lone Ranger I can't see this guy really being that good of a leading man simply because of his age and lack of real acting. Despite what people say about the Social Network which was just facebook the movie there wasn't a real sense of a commitment from Armie Hammer when he played the twins. I just see a face like all male actors in Hollywood the real good ones are the ones who look like you or I not a poster child for a Kelvin Cline billboard ad. I do hope that Johnny Depp kicks this guys ass up one side and down the other.
Lastly I hope this remake of a remake of the original Great Gatsby is as good as they have been putting out there, i love the book and the original film along with its remake. I just hope they do the author proud.
