Here's your chance to help us "cull the herd", so to speak:
'Akira' - the classic anime film about bike gangs and psychic mutants in a post-apocalyptic Neo-Tokyo - has been tossed around for an Americanized remake for over two decades now. Well, it looks like we're one step closer - thanks to the most recent rewrite by Steve Kloves (of 'Harry Potter' film fame), Warner Bros. Pictures and director Albert Hughes ('The Book of Eli') have reportedly begun to send out scripts to a "short list" of actors who they'd like to pursue for the main roles.

For the role of Kaneda (right), the main protagonist and gang-leader who rides a custom made motorcyle: Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Justin Timberlake, Joaquin Phoenix, and Chris Pine have been sent the script: Update: Garrett Hedlund outlives the competition and walks away with his life... and the role.

For the role of Tetsuo (left), Kaneda's best friend who begins to manifest psychic powers: Robert Pattinson, Andrew Garfield and James McAvoy have been sent the script: Update: Andrew Garfield lives to act another day...

Now, regularly we'd ask you Spillios to tell us who you think should be cast in the film. However, that's not how "Casting Cull" works - instead of telling us who should get the role, we want you to "cull the herd" by telling us which actor (one from the list) should not - under any circumstances - be given the role. Think of it like a casting call, but in reverse - the first actor to be "culled" 10 times... gets crossed off the list (we'll update throughout the day). Whoever is left standing at the end gets to survive... for now. Remember to vote once for each character (Kaneda and Tetsuo), aaand... begin!

Comment by OverlyWhiteMale on October 19, 2011 at 11:27pm First off, this whole idea is fucked. The animated film is a piece of true art.
That being said, for fun's sake, I will say that the shit-heel from Beastly, Alex Pettyfer, needs to be kept as far away from this as possible. In either role, he'd rape our hope and leave it bleeding in the woods, Last House on the Left style.
It gives me slight hope that they are talking about Garfield and Hedlund, two guys who can act and act VERY well...

Wait, you wouldn't be glad if this film brought more attention to the original and killed live action anime adaptions?
Comment by John Lemus on March 24, 2011 at 7:38am An American Akira doing well is a double edge sword. I did not mind Dragon Ball Evolution. I actually really liked the movie. The action was great the dialog was there. It was a very contemporary film and it actually had some Asian actors. If An American Akira does well despite having nothing in common with the series apart from the names More studios will buy more Anime properties and pretty much wipe there asses with them. Do we really want to see Tom Cruise playing Alucard in a Vampire Hunter D movie.
Thank you JiggyPop for the clarification though I think it would have been a little more interesting had she actually been from the fire nation born after the war.

Comment by John Lemus on March 23, 2011 at 8:53pm The Last Airbender was a disgrace to the series but because of the money the studio got for the movie rights they are making a new Avatar anime-ted series this time around it will feature a female fire bender named Korra.

One good thing about the bad publicity the movie got is more people will be spared from seeing the sequel to the biggest piece of shit that has ever been let lose on the planet. I blame global warming on M Knight Shamalamadingdong. The pollution he has been spewing out over the years is a million times worse then the green house effect and an inconvenient truth.
