Brad Bird To Direct 'Here There Be Monsters?'

If 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' ends up failing to quench your thirst for supernatural re-imaginings of history, fear not! Legendary Pictures is currently working on producing Brian Helgeland's mash-up screenplay 'Here There Be Monsters.' The story centers on Revolutionary War hero John Paul Jones fighting an epic battle against, you guessed it, sea monsters. Originally the project was being helmed by director Robert Zemeckis ('Back to the Future,' 'Forrest Gump'), but he jumped ship back in November. Now it looks like the studio is interested in netting Brad Bird ('Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol') to replace him. Bird is meeting with Legendary's higher ups, but no official deal is yet on the table.

This is awesome news! Brad Bird's 'Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol' wasn't just a smash hit, it was a statement that forever put to bed any notion that the guy could only direct animation. However, knowing that his next project is Pixar's '1906,' I wondered how long it would be before he again tried his hand at live-action. While I'm not a rabid fan of the history/monster mash-ups, the idea of a Revolutionary War hero fighting supernatural aquatic beasts does sound like great summer blockbuster fodder. Nothing against Robert Zemeckis, I mean the guy did give us 'Back to the Future' after all, but I can't tell you how glad I am that he is off this project. He's gotten into a rather disturbing trend of creepy mo-cap animation lately and I shudder to think what the sea monsters would have looked like under his control. However, until an official deal is made, this story is still very much up in the air...or at sea...or something.

What do you guys think? Are you interested in seeing this film? Do you like the idea of Brad Bird directing?

I would watch Brad Bird direct a pile of dog shit for an hour, or even worse, a Twilight remake....okay, maybe not that far, but whichever movie he gets behind, he's already got my money.

I'll watch Brad Bird direct almost anything.

James Horner is scoring 1906.  I hope Brad Bird has the foresight to tell Horner to lay off that five-note Terror motif, because Horner will probably go total "Enemy at the Gate" with a disaster film.

No!

I wanna see him do 1906.

Eh we'll see.

I feel like the idea itself is somewhat a bunch higher ups riding the history piece+monsters story before it burns out.

Still go Brad Bird go n.n

Brad Bird is now confirmed as an awesome director..but..I just wish he would do something, idk.. more interesting for his next movie. This sounds like whoever came up with the idea, just wrote down an event / character on seperate pieces of paper, folded them...and threw the papers in a box...

...shook it up, and whatever the 1st character and...weird idea, they picked, they called it a story.

"Ok we got, John Paul...hmm interesting...and, oh sea monsters...huh? uuh, ok lets go with it I guess"

Sorry, I'm a huge fan of Brad Bird, and M:I IV was AWESOME for his directorial debut...but...this? Sounds pretty lame to be completely honest.

if brad bird takes this job, it just means that MI:5 would end up being in the back burner.  and i was hoping they would keep the same team (patton, pegg, renner, and EVEN tom cruise).

It would be great if they could add a small time travel element where the bassist from Led Zeppelin gets sent back in time to help battle the sea monsters too. Hilarity and "Who's on First" routines could ensue.
