Brad Bird To Direct Disney's '1952?'

Brad Bird's dance card post-'M:I-Ghost Protocol' is filling up quickly, and apparently filling up with numerically-titled movies. In addition to his in-the-works Pixar adventure '1906,' Bird is now evidently set to direct sci-fi flick '1952' for Disney. The details made available regarding this new project are extremely limited, no one's even sure what specifically the title refers to. What we do know is that the film will be penned by Damon Lindelof ('Prometheus') and will be the first that he's produced right from the ground floor. Disney initially made the rather expensive deal with Lindelof to write the '1952' last year, but the inclusion of Brad Bird in the director's chair has sparked renewed interest in this secretive project. Disney is looking to begin production next year.

What I find interesting about this project is that no one can even say whether '1952' will be an animated film or if it will be live-action. One would assume, given the enormity of Lindelof's deal and the fact that he's never written an animated feature film before, that this will be live-action, but Brad Bird is now a director who has proven he can work in either medium so this is still a complete wild card. I wonder if this gig is the reason Bird had to depart 'Here There Be Monsters,' the history/fantasy mash-up wherein American patriot John Paul Jones battles sea monsters. One could also speculate that '1952' may also be the reason he bowed out of doing the next 'Mission: Impossible,' but with that franchise's history of never having the same director helm more than one film, and Bird's own assertion that that's how the series should remain, it's likely the two events are unrelated. In any event, as long as we still get to see '1906,' I'm happy to see Bird land another large-scale movie.

What do you guys think? Do you think '1952' will be animated or live-action? Is it possible to get excited for a project based on who's on board without knowing anything about it?

Paint me curious. Mission Impossible IV was one of my favorite action films in a very long time. It had that classic 'old-fashioned' feeling that I feel is lacking from a lot of Hollywood enterprises as of late.

Secretive films are always fun, but I'm not going to think about it too hard until more details emerge.

Strange. The year suggests it would look good as an animated film, but title '1952' as a number sounds like it should be restricted to a live action. Yet again, '9' was an animated film. Maybe this will be a live action-animated combo. It's been done in the past, and it's proven successful.

Can't wait to find out though!

Brad directed one of the best homages to 1950s sci fi, it was called Iron Giant.

I thought I heard someone saying that 1952 was possibly either a disguise title (like that of Blue Harvest) or a working title, used in order to keep the real title also a secret.

Brad Bird should just have all of his movies be named after years from 1900-1999. Wouldn't that be awesome?

Brad Bird and Damon Lindelof? This will probably be one of the best films of that year whenever it comes out.
