Brad Bird Shoots Down Rumor That He'll Be Directing 'Star Wars Episode VII'

Trying to keep up with all the internet rumors regarding who will be directing the new 'Star Wars' film is starting to make me dizzy. Eventually we're going to know who is directing 'Episode VII' before the announcement is made, if only by process of elimination. Now it appears we can also rule out Brad Bird. The buzz over the weekend seemed pretty confident that 'The Incredibles' helmer would be behind the camera for the first of the new franchise under the Disney/Lucasfilm partnership. Well before we could even start thinking about Edna being the new Yoda, Bird debunked the rumor with one curt tweet. When asked by a fan if his next film would be 'Star Wars,' he said...

"Nope. A science fiction film. Not Star Wars."

Bird later mentions, in a subsequent tweet, that the science fiction film he is referring to is a Disney project entitled '1952.' He's also set to direct a Pixar earthquake flick called '1906.' Now it's time to play the hindsight game. On the one hand, it makes total sense that Bird Bird would have been in the running for the 'Star Wars' gig. He's a great director who has not only proven himself in animation with 'The Incredibles' and 'Rataouille,' but last year also demonstrated his knack for live-action films; emphasis indeed on the action. 'Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol' was not only a strong crossover for Bird, but arguably the best in that series. He was able to rejuvenate the Mission: Impossible franchise by zeroing in on specific facets and expanding upon them, something that would have served him well on 'Episode VII.' It also makes sense that Disney would want to go with someone "in house" especially after they hired the 'Toy Story 3' writer to pen the new 'Star Wars' script. That being said, with Bird's incredibly busy schedule, I'm not sure when anyone thought he would be able to get away to take the reins here.

What do you guys think? Would you have been on board with Bird for 'Episode VII?' Who will be the next director to be debunked as helming the new 'Star Wars?'

Sad day.

That's a real shame, I thought he would have been an excellent person to have on the team for this movie. But... I guess he has too many other projects to work on at the moment, it just wasn't the right time for him....

haha why would he want to direct this? I doubt any mainstream director will want to take on ep VII

A sad piece of news, but maybe he can make one in the future. Disney owns it now so who's to say we won't get a Star Wars film directed by Brad Bird in the next 10 to 15 years?
