For a while now, we've been hearing about Brad Bird's super secret Disney project, and still we have very few details to go on. We do know that it will be some sort of sci-fi film, and that Damon Lindelof ('Prometheus') will be co-writing the script. Last week, we learned that George Clooney had committed to playing the lead in the movie, which for a long time was operating under the working title '1952.' Now, Disney has sent a press release announcing that the film's actual title will be 'Tomorrowland,' and confirmed its release date of December 19th, 2014. Beyond that, even the official word from the studio gives us no details on the plot. We still have no idea what this movie will be about, but the new title does suggest it will revolve around Disneyland's Tomorrowland Park.
The mystery surrounding this film is puzzling, in so much as I'm not sure why Disney, or perhaps Bird, finds it necessary to conceal even the basic premise. That being said, I am always complaining that movie marketing is too spoilery so perhaps this is the pendulum swinging in the other direction. Again, the new title, and given the studio releasing the movie, would suggest that the Disney theme park will factor prominently into 'Tomorrowland.' However, Disney's 2007 animated film 'Meet The Robinsons' was already sort of their Tomorrowland movie, in that it was a vision of the future based on how it is represented at the park. It was also a loving tribute to the utopic ideals of Walt Disney himself. So I don't see 'Tomorrowland' being a rehash of that same conceit. A little research reveals that in 1952, Walt Disney was deep into the planning stages for Disneyland; said to be traveling the world to derive inspiration for its design. If I may theorize for a moment, I think 'Tomorrowland' will center on a supernatural, sci-fi-centric event that Disney encounters in his travels. That would also explain why the banker's box, the film's one piece of viral marketing pictured below, contained photos of Disney, and notes on a project about alien contact. Will Disney have a close encounter while exploring Republic of the Children Park in Argentina? Who knows.
What do you guys think? Do you approve of the new title? What do you think 'Tomorrowland' will actually be about?'

Comment by Richard Dempsey on January 29, 2013 at 3:13pm I personally thought that Brad Bird should've done the next star wars film.
Comment by Tiffany on January 29, 2013 at 2:59pm Yay! more Disney stuff! I hope it has something cute and fluffy in it.
Comment by C.H. Gorog on January 29, 2013 at 2:54pm Isn't Disney a monopoly of intellectual properties in Hollywood these days?
Comment by Lt. Commander Armstrong on January 29, 2013 at 2:45pm Fuck. Brad Bird is directing so this will probably end up being good, but then Disney will most likely try to make this a franchise. Get ready for the next Pirates of the Caribbean.
