If it's crap ... We'll tell you
I'm a big fan of William Lustig's 1980 horror film 'Maniac,' the Mondo poster is actually hanging directly above the computer in my office as I write this, but I'm still not sure about the idea of a remake. However, the first batch of set photos from Frank Khalfoun's version, written by Alexandre Aja ('Piranha 3D'), were pretty encouraging. I'm beginning to come around on the idea that 'LOTR's Elijah Wood can take on the role of the ferocious serial killer that Joe Spinell made cult legend. These new images are further encouraging. The first is of a clearly post-murder Wood clutching a knife, while the second shows a mannequin with a bloody gash on its forehead. As strange as it looks, this second image is actually the most direct reference to the original film we've yet seen, so it's comforting to know that not all the canon has been discarded. The final image gives us a glimpse of co-star Nora Arnezeder ('Safe House'). The army of mannequins behind her, when coupled with the previous image, makes even this otherwise innocuous image creepy. Take a look at the images below and let us know what you think.
'Maniac' is due in theaters May 26th.
