James Van Elswyk posted a blog postSo I’ve finally played the very popular game known as Bioshock, and let me just say it is a very good game. That’s it though it isn’t a perfect game or in my opinion worth all the hype that it has received. I do believe that after listening to all the praise that when I played the game it didn’t meet up to what everyone was saying. The game story is a kickass mystery you play this nameless voiceless protagonist who just survived a plane crash and finds his way to Rapture city. Immediately you are being attacked by these crazed survivors, in this dystopian city. You are listening to this voice over a radio telling you to kill Andrew Ryan. For those of you who haven’t played the game that is where I will stop because after that the story gets intense and all your questions are answered. I did think the final boss was dumb as hell and I do believe the game doesn’t have the best ending to this kickass story. The sound works amazing in this game especially with the enemies. When you hear a Big Daddy coming you have to either be very careful or get your game face on. The voice acting for the characters is pretty good, yet again you are a silent protagonist which as I’ve mentioned in previous reviews annoys the crap out of me. The game looks pretty damn good for this coming out in 2007. It doesn’t hold up to today’s graphics but compared to some games that came out that year this game looks great. The gameplay is fun as hell they have a great FPS here. I didn’t focus on the powers I got too much besides the power to use lighting but the game has this nice challenge without being a dick. The only thing that was annoying was the hacking; you have to do this mini game that involves rerouting pipes that was just a pain in the ass. The AI is smart enough to flank me but it was dumb enough to just stand there at times as well. Overall I enjoyed this game, I didn’t agree with the hype but I do understand it. If you haven’t played it yet I would say buy it used because after you beat it there is no real reason to go back. I give this game a B-.

Comment by B-rod on January 8, 2013 at 8:27pm I can completely agree with what you said about the atomasphere. Sadly I still don't have a good enough PC to play System Shock 2 or 1 because I've been dying to play those and never got the chance.
The fact that System Shock 2 fans had been waiting for a new game for so damn long added to the hype of Bioshock. Bioshock's creepy scifi time capsule atmosphere and award winning artistic design lived up to the hype, but for me the gameplay and lack of RPG character options from System Shock 2 was a huge letdown. Yes the Biopowers were cool as hell. It just wasn't enough to put it above other top shooters. A B- sounds about right. Lets hope Bioshock Infinite gives me much more to sink my teeth into.
