Billy Crystal Is The New (Old) Oscars Host

This year's Oscars has had more than its fair share of controversy. First, Oscar producer/film director Brett Ratner made extremely immature comments which, rightfully, offended the homosexual community and forced him to resigned his position. Then, as if showing some strange 'Tower Heist' solidarity, Eddie Murphy walked away from his duties as host of the ceremony, an honor for which he had campaigned vigorously. Nearly audible buzz followed as to who the next host would be. The front-runners appeared to be Ricky Gervais and the Muppets. But that buzz was only permitted to carry on for one day, as now it has been confirmed that eight-time Oscar host Billy Crystal has been given this year's honor.

Don't get me wrong, I like Billy Crystal a lot. He's a comedy legend and he's proven himself to be an adept host on multiple occasions, but this just seemed like the easiest choice the Oscars could come up with. Granted, they are somewhat pressed for time, but it seems like they could have taken just a few more days and secured a more innovative choice for host. This also seems to run counter to their agenda of trying to get more young people to watch the Academy Awards. Now we can expect more "you look mahvalous" jokes and a very safe, comfortable awards show. Seriously guys, you know Ricky Gervais is still available right?

What do you guys think? Excited about Billy Crystal? Does anyone watch the Oscars anymore?

Oh, what could have been....
the Muppets hosting would have been pure chaos and insanity, and I would love every second of it.

I'll watch, it'll be tame and boring, but I'll watch.  Just thinking, my favorite Billy Crystal movie is Running Scared, 80's shorts aside him and Gregory Hines were awesome.

Admittedly the Muppets hosting would be a logistical nightmare but if they did it would be one of the only Oscars I would watch start to finish

There is a God, that's all I can say.

If the Muppets hosted either with or without Ricky Gervais it would've easily been one of if not the most watched Oscars programs and possibly the most critically acclaimed. If they would just try and be creative about things it could've worked.

i still watch the oscars, despite having several problems with their choices for award winners in the past years (if anyone here believes wallace and grommit could ever bit a ghibli film, i invite u to pull your head out of your ass), i believe the reason that ricky gervais was ignored was that incident with the globe, and kermit is really the only muppet that could b a host. the choice of billy crystal was a good idea, as the oscars need to get back to the basic entertainment formula. course im the guy who thinks that the oscars should be judged by people from across the spectrum of movie quality, and not just innovated people in those fields. younger, up and coming people in the business are more able to provide a voice for the younger crowd, but we can still bring in the old and experienced grandpas to provide the voice of yester year

"This also seems to run counter to their agenda of trying to get more young people to watch the Academy Awards."

After this year's crappy attempt to do just that, they probably decided to ditch that agenda.

Some of you people amaze me. When Billy Crystal showed up to present a category at last year's Oscars, everyone said "Wow, Billy Crystal's pure awesomeness merely reminds of what we're missing out on." And yet when everyone gets their wish and he's hosting, everybody whines and goes "Weeeeeehhh! I wanted the Muppets!! Weeeeehhh!!!" Billy Crystal is one of the best hosts in Oscar history and is a welcomed choice. What would you rather have them do? Bring back Jon Stewart or Chris Rock or Anne "Trying too hard" Hathaway?
