With a story as epic as 'The Hobbit,' there is no shortage of great roles to go around. Thankfully, director Peter Jackson has proven time and time again that he knows how to assemble a fantastic cast. 'The Hobbit' already boasts the likes of Martin Freeman, Benedict Cumberbatch, Evangeline Lilly, and Luke Evans in addition to the outstanding actors returning from the original trilogy. Now it seems another talented performer has agreed to undertake this unexpected journey. Billy Connolly ('The Boondock Saints') will be portraying Dain Ironfoot, dwarf warrior and cousin to Thorin Oakenshield. Here's what Jackson had to say on the casting...
We could not think of a more fitting actor to play Dain Ironfoot, the staunchest and toughest of Dwarves, than Billy Connolly, the Big Yin himself. With Billy stepping into this role, the cast of The Hobbit is now complete. We can't wait to see him on the Battlefield!
I love Billy Connolly, he's one of those older actors who often appears in smaller roles to deliver hilarity or brilliance, or sometimes both in equal measure. Of course, I saw 'Boondock Saints' for the first time when I was in high school so I loved the hell out of it. And truthfully, despite now being more aware of some of its glaring faults, I still love it. I have to agree with Jackson in that I am incredibly excited to see Billy on the battlefield as Dain Ironfoot. I've never actually read 'The Hobbit' to be honest, but from the report Dain Ironfoot looks to be quite a significant role so it's surprising that Connolly would just now be cast given that the first installment of Jackson's two-part adaptation opens this December. Perhaps Dain Ironfoot's role will be relegated largely to the second installment, due out in 2013. Having not read the book, I can only hypothesize at his presence throughout the story. This is where I need my well-read Spillios to help me out.
Tell me a bit about Dain Ironfoot, Tolkien fans. Do you think Connolly is a good fit for the character?

To quote American Movie: "Kick Fuckin Ass Man!", this is great fucking new. But still I wish Jackson could of given a role to Bill Bailey.
Comment by Jojotogi on February 9, 2012 at 4:53pm Dain Ironfoot is the ruler (king? not sure actually) of a settlement of wares in the far north. He's Thorin's cousin, and at a certain point in the story, Thorin sends word for him to muster an army of dwarves. I can't say much more because it's getting into serious spoiler territory.
that begin said, DWARF ARMIES? And Billy Connolly is leading them? Hell yes, I want to see that!

Dain is only briefly mentioned in the book, so it really doesn't matter who plays him.
