Well it's finally finished. After a casting search that seemed be combing every corner of the entertainment universe, 'Star Trek 2' has finally found its bad guy. Benedict Cumberbatch, ('War Horse,' BBC's 'Sherlock') has landed the gig. As of yet, the specifics of who he will be playing (i.e. what alien race) has not been revealed. Originally it was reported that J.J. Abrams was in talks with Benicio del Toro for the role of the antagonist sending rumors spreading like Tribbles that he would be playing Khan. That rumor seemed less-than-accurate when del Toro ended up leaving the project. In his absence, Abrams was auditioning potential replacements in Edgar Ramirez ('Carlos') and Jordi Molla ('Colombiana'), but it looks like Cumberbatch proved victorious under the radar.
It's not often that movie news makes me jubilant, but I am nothing short of jubilant right now. Benedict Cumberbatch is an amazing actor and his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes for the BBC is a revelation. He plays Sherlock with such narcissism and utter disdain for humanity that Holmes is almost a villain in his own right. No matter which popular baddie they assign him, or even if they give him a heretofore unseen villainous noob, I have no doubt that he will knock this one right out of the damn park. His star really does appear to be on the rise. In addition to this role, he also earned a spot on the cast for Peter Jackson's 'The Hobbit.' The 'Star Trek 2' cast may have lost Benicio del Toro, but the addition of Peter Weller and now Benedict Cumberbatch seems a suitable trade; a trade up even.
What do you guys think? Are you excited about Cumberbatch landing the villain? Who might he play?
'Star Trek 2' is set for a May 17, 2013 release

Comment by MahMahAfro on January 9, 2012 at 3:52pm Glad they didn't go for Khan as the villain, would've been a very unimaginative move, and a knee-jerk reaction to people's complaints that the last one had a pretty weak antagonist.
Unless of course, Benedict Cumberbatch is going to be playing Khan, in which case... I really don't know what to say...
Comment by mjtfreeze on January 8, 2012 at 7:31am I hope this movie is at least 2 hours long. Because I want more time with these actors and characters.
Comment by MattPayneMPA on January 7, 2012 at 6:42pm Great news, and I so eager to see the followup to the amazing reboot film.I had heard that they were set to release this for Christmas of 2012.But it seems that you can't rush perfection,so I've started counting down the long days to May of 2013.After 2009's great film,it will be a joy to beam back aboard the Enterprise a year and a half from now.Live Long And Prosper and see you May 17th,2013! :D

Comment by Ladya on January 6, 2012 at 7:35am Am not even a Star Trek fan, but as a proud Cumberbitch I will be in line to watch this.
Only downside to BBC's Sherlock is that it's only 3 episodes per series. Yes, each episode is an hour and a half (basically, a movie) but there's no such thing as too little cumber-loving XD
Comment by Owl on January 6, 2012 at 5:32am Fantastic! I'm so excited I could tap dance! This is really great news; I’m a huge fan of his work. Benedict is a brilliant actor!

Comment by ThatDudeWhoReviews on January 6, 2012 at 1:59am He is phenomenal as Sherlock Holmes (It's all I've seen of him), so I'd be curious to what he could do as a villain.
