Love him or hate him, Director Baz Luhrmann ('Moulin Rouge!') is set to begin filming his 3D adaptation of the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel 'The Great Gatsby' in August. Known for his flamboyant use of color and shotgun-quick cuts, this will be the first 3D film from the Australian director, and will reunite him with actor Leonardo DiCaprio (who will play Jay Gatsby) for the first time since 1996's 'Romeo + Juliet'.
The book tells the story of Nick Carraway, a young man from Minnesota, who moves to New York in 1922 and discovers the world of the "new rich" - people who have become rich too recently to establish social connections and are hence prone to garish displays of their wealth. One of these "new rich" is Jay Gatsby (DiCaprio), who is the catalyst for an entire tragedy of romance, affairs, deception and death, as Gatsby seeks to reunite with his erstwhile lover, Carraway's cousin Daisy Buchanan who is herself married to a philandering husband.
No word yet on who will play Nick Carraway, but 'Never Let Me Go' actress Carey Mulligan has reportedly been offered the role of Daisy. 'The Great Gatsby' will be filmed in Sydney, Australia and will be the first ever live-action 3D film shot in New South Wales.

Comment by Jordan Acosta on February 22, 2011 at 9:07am Seriously, why 3d? So the 20's can roar all around us?
Isn't that the point of period pieces?
Comment by John Lemus on February 22, 2011 at 8:22am Oh and to Answer Why 3D. I went to see the Metropolitan Opera in 3D and it was amazing.
Play set pieces are ideal to film in 3d because they are already in 3D in way They all have elements of Fore-ground Middle-ground and Background and the people interacting in all three.
Wow if only they would do Jekylle and Hyde The Musical in 3d They have some of the best set pieces.
I am actually working on a play my self its a steam punk noir themed play. my idea is to have all the makeup and clothing and set pieces in black and white.
to get an idea of what steam punk noir is

Well now it's bound to be a dissapointment. No matter how good it is, I'll just be comparing it to Boardwalk Empire in 3D.
Boardwalk Empire in 3D... (:^O

Comment by mister Y on February 21, 2011 at 10:35pm it all depends on who's writing the screen play with this one but if DiCapro's on i have high hopes
the movie needs to be written by someone who can do very dry humor and make it fun (Aaron Sorkin)
also why in 3D there is no purpose for that head-ache
all the director needs to do is make sure the colors described in the book are right and Joseph Gorden Levitt is Nick
honestly the direction of this movie can be taken any where just don't bore the audience with just a summarized version of the book. We demand to be entertained!!
