Baz Luhrmann's 'Great Gatsby' Pushed To Next Summer

Director Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel 'The Great Gatsby' was all set to make your holiday season a little more literary. However, it seems that the stiff competition at the December 25th release slot has prompted the studio to push the release of 'The Great Gatsby' to next summer. The big budget 3D 'Gatsby' stars Leonardo DiCaprio as the titular, enigmatic millionaire and Carey Mulligan ('Drive') as Daisy, the woman for whom he has always pined. Tobey Maguire and Joel Edgerton also star. Dan Fellman, president of WB's domestic distribution, had this to say on the move...

"Based on what we've seen, Baz Luhrmann's incredible work is all we anticipated and so much more. It truly brings Fitzgerald's American classic to life in a completely immersive, visually stunning and exiting way. We think moviegoers of all ages are going to embrace it, and it makes sense to ensure this unique film reaches the largest audience possible,"

On the one hand, I understand the decision to move 'The Great Gatsby' away from December 25th. The highly anticipated releases of Quentin Tarantino's 'Django Unchained' and the first installment of Peter Jackson's 'The Hobbit' would have given Luhrmann's movie quite a run for its box office money. On the other hand, it's strange that Warner Brothers would move a film like 'Gatsby' out of awards contention for this year, especially given how much confidence they appear to have in it. Not to mention the fact that moving it to next summer forces 'The Great Gatsby' to compete with 'Man of Steel,' 'Iron Man 3,' a a host of other major blockbusters lining up to consume summer ticket sales. Personally, 'The Great Gatsby' is not exactly at the top of my most anticipated list no matter which season it ends up in. I love the book, but that first trailer did very little to incite my enthusiasm. It looks too fluffy and, well, Luhrmann-y. But that's just me, what do you guys think?

Are you more likely to see 'The Great Gatsby' if it's not up against 'Django Unchained' and 'The Hobbit?'

Tom Hiddleston who, weird coincidence, played F. Scott Fitzgerald in Midnight in Paris, got the perfect look to be Gatsby. I just can't put that out of my mind so I except absolutly nothing great from this. I really don't buy this cast

I was looking forward to see this film sooner, but yeah, i'd rather see Tarantino's film over this.

This is the same reason why Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was push from November 2008 to July 2009, because WB is retarded.

I was really really looking forward to seeing this and Django Unchained together... :(

@ The Film Rebellion

Your logic is flawed in that you assumed Kanye would be on the films soundtrack.

Your logic is more flawed by forgetting that it's more dangerous to put a drama against the fantasy epic like The Hobbit which is apart of a highly acclaimed series that has it's dramatic and romantic scenes by a highly acclaimed actor. Also, the Western Comedy like Django, which also has one of Gatsby's leading men, the general public can easily get tired of an actor. Compared to fun scifi-ish action film that Ironman is and the Wild Card that is Man of steel (as it could go in so many directions).

Your logic is most flawed forgetting that, not everyone would want to see a superhero flick and maybe wants to see period piece romantic drama. Personally, depending on release date I'll probably see Gatsby over Ironman 3 if it gets released in the same month as there hasn't been much to draw me back to Ironman as a film series.

@Dork Knight, does Carey Mulligan even have cleavage to show?  I get the impression she is built like a 13 year old boy, especially with the short hair she always sports.  I can only recall seeing her in "Drive", in which I didn't find her attractive or charming, only a soft spoken person who didn't attract any attention at all from me, much less sexual attention.

oh yea and i know guys like myself dont run out to see a movie ONLY because of an actress (u know sorta like how *many* girls will still pay for a complete piece of shit only cause it stars a certain actor) but Carrey Mulligan I love because she doesnt try showing her cleavage (well i havent seen Shame yet so maybe)...but she just smiles..looks cute..and is a really good actor. ill be PISSED if Baz Luhrmann puts a dent in her career. cause seriously Baz...hundreds of other people should be making your movies instead. im sure anyone could do better.

I like how he pretends to be artistic..but really it just looks like a 14yr old after a 4-pack of Red Bulls directed it. Every scene gets chopped into a million clips.

Like i said...trust me watch that Nostalgia Critic review. he even proves that a lot of his scenes...gets edited and cut SO much that each cut doesn't even last 5 seconds. it goes...1 secon...4 seconds..2 seconds..1 second...its like a fucking crackhead stole the camera.

better not ruin a classic book...i dont trust baz luhrmann anymore. moulin rouge was a stinking pile of shit. BIG TIME. and yet it gets nominates for oscars? REALLY? that movie is so damn shitty its incredible. as if i thought it was bad enough...go watch "Nostalgia Critic"s 45 minute review. then youll REALLY see why.

oh and if you like moulin rouge...please do not ever reccomend a movie to me.

I guess my sister is going to see Les Miserables this Christmas while I go watch Django. I'm glad they moved it, less competition.
