Battlestar Galactica: The Plan ** out of **** Spill Rating: HIGH RENTAL!
Battlestar Galactica is my favorite show of all time. I could go on for hours on how much I love the show but that is for another time. The ending of the show may have disappointed nearly everyone but I thought it was perfect. I didn't care about any of the dangling plot threads, I cared about the characters and the show gave every one the ending they deserved. Now that the series is over, The Plan is the final glimpse we'll have of the show but unlike the finale, it goes out with a whimper.
The Plan is supposed to show us "The Plan" that the Cylons had. (The show always began with the Cylons saying they has a plan) However, as the show went on, it became clear that the Cylons never really had a plan other than killing all humans. The film tries to flesh the plan out but we never find out anything. The entire film takes place during the first 3 seasons of the show, from the bombing of the colonies to Cavil being airlocked out of the Galactica.
The Plan practically acknowledges that the writers has no idea what "The Plan" was, with one of the Cavils realizing that bombing the colonies was "a temper tantrum in the form of a cataclysm". It takes 110 minutes to get there and its a huge let down to end the series on. I'm the biggest Battlestar fan there is but this feels like a cash-in. The whole thing is as well-made and acted as the series is but there is nothing here to warrant a purchase.
The one high point that may warrant a rental is Dean Stockwell as Cavil. He was my favorite character of the whole show and he works his magic here. If you have not watched the series and are reading this review, lets just say this guy is the biggest slime-ball of all time. in one sequence in the film, he kills a little boy by stabbing him in the kidneys with a knife and that's just getting started!
If you are a die hard fan of the series, you probably have seen this already but it did not satisfy me in any way. I'm looking forward to Caprica but lets hope they don't end that series like this.
