To understand how powerful this film is and this story is you must understand the true story that took place which this movie is based on, When I say based on I don't mean they make a lot of crap up just to make this story sound exiting because there is no need for that here with BALIBO. Balibo Trailer
http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EApB2ndekZgTo give you a short review of the true events and story this is what happened. A small group comprised of two Australians, reporter Greg Shackleton, 27 and sound recordist Tony Stewart, 21, a New Zealander, cameraman Gary Cunningham, 27, for (Channel 7 Australia) and two Britons, cameraman Brian Peters, 29 and reporter Malcolm Rennie, 28 working for (Channel 9 Australia) were set to East Timor to capture proof that Indonesian forces were ready to mount an attack and invade East Timor and with no other reporters covering this story and no one else outside of East Timor seeming to care about what was taking place these men wanted to bring the story to the world.
While the men were aware that Indonesian troops were to mount an attack on the town of Balibo, they believed that as Australian journalists, they would not be considered military targets. Greg Shackleton was filmed
painting an Australian Flag and the word 'AUSTRALIA' on the wall of a house known locally as the Chinese house.
To understand what then took place is something words alone can not describe and they never could, This is something that has to be seen to believe. To this day this story is considered a very dark topic in Australian news and this movie not only provides us with an AMAZING put together cast and script but a story that is as real as life itself.Starring Anthony Lapaglia as Roger East a journalist who travelled to East Timor to investigate the reports of 5 missing news reporters who have been missing for several weeks and his journey to discover the truth is one you must witness. The Extras on the dvd are also great with the normal things such as Audio commentary with director Robert Connolly, Deleted Scenes and Theatrical trailer but also you get to see the real footage filmed by Greg Shackleton's from East Timor, October 1975 along with Six contextual documentaries, Well worth the price.A truly masterful film that I believe not only should everyone seen but a film that everyone NEEDS to see because once you have seen this film you will understand why.....I for one can't believe this has not been a world wide release yet BUT seeing how it is a small film it does not surprise me HOWEVER If you like a film that moves you with raw truth then this is a film you must check out, IF and when you can.
