J.J. Abrams isn't simply hard at work directing his own films (i.e. 'Star Trek 2'), he's also still producing like a boss. In conjunction with Paramount, his Bad Robot company has just picked up Patrick Aison's spec script 'Wunderkind' for production. The story takes place in the 1970s and follows a young CIA Nazi hunter who teams with an older Mossad Nazi hunter to, well, hunt Nazis. The script has generated a great deal of buzz, with several bidders making attempts to scoop up the property before Abrams and Paramount won out. As of now, no director has been signed to the project.
I was just watching 'X-Men: First Class' again today and thinking, we need more Nazi-hunting action thrillers. Is it too much to hope that Michael Fassbender plays some role in this? I am really excited to see the particulars of this story translated to the screen. My guess is there must be something more to the plot than just "two guys hunt Nazis." As much as I personally wouldn't mind that kind of genre simplicity, I think Quentin Tarantino's 'Inglorious Basterds' has set the bar pretty high for that sort of story device. What will really make the difference for me, as far as full on anticipation goes, is who they snag to direct 'Wunderkind.' It needs to be someone who can balance action set pieces with intense character stories. My pick would be someone like Gareth Evans ('The Raid') or Frederic Jardin ('Sleepless Night').
What do you guys think? Does this project sound interesting to you? Who would be your choice to direct?
