If it's crap... We'll tell you

Source: The Hollywood Reporter

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal has picked up the film rights to the classic Atari video game Asteroids.

In Asteroids, initially released as an arcade game in 1979, a player controlled a triangular space ship in an asteroid field. The object was to shoot and destroy the hulking masses of rock and the occasional flying saucer while avoiding smashing into both.

Matthew Lopez will write the script for the feature adaptation, which will be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

Didn't Robot chicken have a skit with several video game movies like Dig Dug, Asteroids, space invaders, etc.? Well it's nice to see hollywood has a sense of humor about itself.

Since most of the classic arcade games have been mentioned how about making a Wii Sports movie. or perhaps a DDR movie? Hollywood hasn't gotten gamea WITH plot right for movies yet. I shudder to think what kind of plot they'll throw together for this.

Why would they have to buy the property I mean its just asteroids. Would Atari sue any movie with exploding asteroids?

Nothing says a great movie like seeing a triangle shaped ship blast crudely drawn asteroids for an hour and a half.
