For a while now, a film based on the popular Ubisoft videogame series 'Assassin's Creed' has been attempting to get off the ground. Though the road proved a bit bumpy, the one mission they can scratch off the list is finding an actor to star as the games' mysterious lead. The project aimed high when it targeted Michael Fassbender, but that target was indeed acquired. Now, in a further stroke of fortune, the 'Assassin's Creed' movie has landed a funding and distribution partner. According to the press release, Ubisoft Motion Pictures had teamed with New Regency who will provide additional financing and distro while Ubisoft maintains control of the creative aspects of the movie. The script is being put together as the film has been fast-tracked. No word yet on a proposed release date.
It's hard for me to get excited about videogame adaptations; so many stinkers. However, there is something about the 'Assassin's Creed' games that has always felt resoundingly cinematic. Now granted, plenty of games over the years have developed a taste for movie-quality cutaways and interstitial exposition moments, but few of them piqued my interest in seeing a filmic version of the game's universe quite like 'Assassin's Creed.' The landing of Michael Fassbender should go a long way to overcoming the, admittedly well earned, perception that movies based on videogames are a lesser breed of genre fare. Given that Fassbender also worked with New Regency on the upcoming 'Twelve Years a Slave,' their reason for partnering on this project is less than clandestine. My only concern now is that the "fast-track" status will result in an overly rushed script. Hopefully the two companies involved here are savvy enough to know that a poorly-constructed screenplay is the fastest way to assassinate the potential of a movie like this.
What do you guys think? Excited for an 'Assassin's Creed' movie? Think Fassbender is the right casting choice? Which game elements/storylines do you consider imperative for inclusion in the screenplay?

Comment by Ryan Barry on October 25, 2012 at 6:03pm Great news! Hope they put the effort needed into this and see this start a trend of actually trying to turn videogames into proper movie franchises :D
Comment by Moriel on October 23, 2012 at 8:16pm Fuck to the Yes. Even if the script is terrible I'll watch it :D
Comment by Cranky Old Dude on October 23, 2012 at 7:35pm Mr. Fassbender wants to produce and star??? Oh HELL YES! This is a very good sign. He would also be my choice for the next Bond or a new Bruce Wayne.

How is the story to Assassin's Creed even remotely complicated? Desmond gets snatched, finds out about the Animus and that he can relive the lives of his ancestors, big evil corporation is actually ancient Templar society, major cataclysm on it's way, he has to uncover secrets and find items in his past lives in order to unlock the mystery of the present and stop the end of the world. Bam. One sentence.
Comment by Brian Button on October 23, 2012 at 12:37pm I disagree with a lot of people here. I like the AC story line. It takes a lot of time investment and paying attention, but the story is pretty straight forward. The modern day assassins are facing extinction at the hands of the templars. The templars are looking for an ultimate weapon that will give them dominion over people, and so Desmond enters the animus to trace the whereabouts of said ultimate weapon. That's about a spoiler free as I can explain the story.
I don't think the story can be adapted to a 2 hour film though... Unless their planning to make a trilogy, I wouldn't even bother trying. There are many other games that would be much more logical to choose for film adaptation. Red Dead, God of War, Infamous... hell.. even Darksiders. Their not all lush, deep, Oscar worthy stories(maybe Red Dead could be), but for a summer block buster they're more than entertaining enough.
Comment by Yet Another Korey on October 23, 2012 at 12:27pm Fassbender works great her.
But I a always worried about movie adaptations of videogames. The last one we got that we can say was not a complete mess was Prince of Persia starring Jake Gyllenhall and that changed so many story elements that it was almost unrecognizable.
For this to work they would need to include a lot of backstory, so hopefully they plan this out and take it further than shoving more than one game into a single film.
Comment by Mister Steel on October 23, 2012 at 11:17am After seeing him play Magneto: Nazi Hunter, yeah, I don't have any problem with him in this role whatsoever.
Comment by Aimal Khan on October 23, 2012 at 9:32am I hope they get rid of all the modern day animus stuff.
Bene.... :)
Comment by Obscene Otter on October 23, 2012 at 5:58am If they do this well I'm going to be so damn happy.Plus Fassbender attached= :D
