Ashton Kutcher Chosen To Play Steve Jobs In Biopic

Ashton Kutcher ('The Butterfly Effect') has been tapped to star in an independent film about the life of Apple co-founder, and all-around genius, Steve Jobs. The movie, at this point called 'Jobs,' will be directed by Michael Stern ('Swing Vote') and based on a script by Matt Whitely. 'Jobs' will cover Steve's story from hippie all the way to co-founder of one of the largest companies on the planet. The film is set to begin shooting in May, convenient for Kutcher who will be on break from CBS' 'Two and a Half Men' where he not too long ago replaced troubled actor Charlie Sheen. This project is entirely separate from the Jobs biopic Sony Pictures is planning, which will be based on the biography by Walter Isaacson of Time magazine.

I will grant you that there is a resemblance between young Steve Jobs and Ashton Kutcher, but is that all that we require anymore when casting for biopics? Shouldn't, I don't know, acting ability come into play here somewhere? If the performance is strong enough, and the story compelling, an audience can often overlook dissimilarities in appearance. Frank Langella looks very little like Richard Nixon, but I'll be damned if he isn't spellbinding in 'Frost/Nixon.' Plus, Steve Jobs was one of the greatest minds of our time, and he's going to be played by the 'Punk'd' guy? I know he's done a few dramatic roles and whatnot, but let's just say my confidence in his ability is thin at best. The good news here is that we are apparently still going to see the Sony biopic so this may end up being an 'Infamous'/'Capote' situation wherein we can choose which Jobs cinebiography we prefer. My money's not on the one featuring the co-star of 'Dude Where's My Car?'

What do you guys think? Is it possible that Kutcher could pull this off? Is physical resemblance all that matters to you in a biopic?

Really? Wow, weird news today. He does look a lot like him in that still though.

I fucking loved Butterfly Effect. I think Ashton can do good in a drama.

The resemblance is undeniable, but has he shown any range as a dramatic actor?

Really Hollywood? The grave is still warm and you're already cashing in. I didn't even like the guy and I think you need to calm the fuck down with this shit.

Whether for money or because they want to suck his dick post-mortem, the swiftness of them starting work on this is inappropriate in my opinion.

@The Dubya I agree with you on Kutcher but he is very similar to Keanu Reeves. Once in a while Keanu Reeves has turned in a performance that was top notch. I can point to films like 'My own private Idaho' 'A Scanner Darkly' 'River's Edge' etc as good performances especially A Scanner Darkly where he holds his own in that strong cast. He also was perfectly cast as Neo in the Matrix because that role was basically written for him. Also Bill and Ted is better than 'Dude Where's my Car' imo and I think that's the general consensus. I'm always going to be happy that Will Smith turned down the Matrix role because like I said that role of Neo seemed to just be written for Keanu Reeves. Acting isn't just in how you talk, it's how you act, it's how you can make us believe that you're character with how you act and respond to certain situations. If you have a film where Keanu doesn't have to emote a lot he's good. That's why he's good at playing either outlandish dude stereotypes or just zoned out characters such as Neo (a hacker) and (A scanner Darkly, zoned out stoner). Not the best actor but I'd cast him above anyone in such roles.

I can't tell if this is serious or not. On one side he is a comedian pretty boy and not know for amazing performances, but he does look somewhat the part.

Well, when he was chosen for 'The Butterfly Effect' I'm sure that very few expected him to deliver in such a heavy role but he did a good job. We'll see; an actor's performance also depends on how capable the director is at getting the most out of him.

I could see Kutcher playing the angry Steve Jobs, but yeah, as soon as he's supposed to say something halfway intelligent that's going to require a bit more acting chops...

I haven't seen Kutcher in anything I have enjoyed since That 70's Show. Doubt
