Ashton Kutcher Chosen To Play Steve Jobs In Biopic

Ashton Kutcher ('The Butterfly Effect') has been tapped to star in an independent film about the life of Apple co-founder, and all-around genius, Steve Jobs. The movie, at this point called 'Jobs,' will be directed by Michael Stern ('Swing Vote') and based on a script by Matt Whitely. 'Jobs' will cover Steve's story from hippie all the way to co-founder of one of the largest companies on the planet. The film is set to begin shooting in May, convenient for Kutcher who will be on break from CBS' 'Two and a Half Men' where he not too long ago replaced troubled actor Charlie Sheen. This project is entirely separate from the Jobs biopic Sony Pictures is planning, which will be based on the biography by Walter Isaacson of Time magazine.

I will grant you that there is a resemblance between young Steve Jobs and Ashton Kutcher, but is that all that we require anymore when casting for biopics? Shouldn't, I don't know, acting ability come into play here somewhere? If the performance is strong enough, and the story compelling, an audience can often overlook dissimilarities in appearance. Frank Langella looks very little like Richard Nixon, but I'll be damned if he isn't spellbinding in 'Frost/Nixon.' Plus, Steve Jobs was one of the greatest minds of our time, and he's going to be played by the 'Punk'd' guy? I know he's done a few dramatic roles and whatnot, but let's just say my confidence in his ability is thin at best. The good news here is that we are apparently still going to see the Sony biopic so this may end up being an 'Infamous'/'Capote' situation wherein we can choose which Jobs cinebiography we prefer. My money's not on the one featuring the co-star of 'Dude Where's My Car?'

What do you guys think? Is it possible that Kutcher could pull this off? Is physical resemblance all that matters to you in a biopic?

Not only casting Ashton Kutcher as the lead role, but this entire biopic is a perfect example of how glorified shit's become these days, just like the making of Social Network.  Invigorating dramas inspired by Product software and profile websites, are you serious bro???? Laaaaaaaaaaaaame.  And I could care less for Kelso even if he could play the role, biopics based on subjects so weak like Facebook and Apple toys is not special and invigorating to make a big deal out of, that's just my opinion.

Dont hate me for saying this, but I at least hold a doubtful hope on some level based on the fact that I liked him in butterfly.  That dude needs a win after his very public divorce so maybe it won't be as horrible as we are all expecting this to be.

it should be noted that Sony pictures is  also doing a Jobs biopic based on that book that came out(which I guess this one isn't for some stupid reason) and they have James McAvoy and Stanley Tucci, in talks apparently, which is better casting since those guys can actually act. I think both these movies are gonna suck. I secretly have more hope for the Kutcher one because the director got a hell of a performance out of Costner in Swing Vote and it'd be at least a little bit interesting to see an oscar bait role given to Ashton Fucking Kutcher.

You should watch Spread dude. Not only is he great in it, but he totally plays against type.

I'm pretty happy about this. I've always thought Kutcher was a talented actor, but always seemed to busy playing that same character from That 70's Show over and over again. It's good to see him doing roles that completely against type.

As for the thing with Punked? One of the actresses from Soul Plane went on to win an Oscar. I rest my case.

To be fair there is a bit of a resemblance...this could turn out to be a breakthrough for his career. With that being said, i couldn't give two shits about this guy. So he better start taking extra acting classes, cause this is going to be a challenging role...Good luck, Kutchie.

Aside from That 70's Show, Ashton Kutcher's been very unlucky when it comes to choosing comedies. For some reason, he just doesn't seem to get any great ones. Even the best of his comedies are just alright and at least cute but nothing more than that. But when it comes to drama, he's shown his talent considerably in my opinion. The problem with Kutcher in this department is that he picks good dramas to demonstrate what he can do but they always get shafted by something and become sadly underrated. The Butterfly Effect alone shows how competent of a dramatic actor he is but he's also delivered some solid performances in movies like The Guardian and Bobby. Hell, in Bobby, he played a really whacked out hippie who did drugs all the time and it was a great part for him to play in a more serious film about one of the most iconic and reputable American politicians of the 20th century.

If Steve Jobs was a hippie himself in his early days, then Ashton Kutcher is almost the perfect choice for the role. He looks so much like Steve Jobs already and despite playing dumb on TV, he looks to be a very smart businessman and one that seems to be incredibly successful when it comes to investing in new technologies and business surrounding it. Let's not forget that Kutcher was one of the very first celebrities to have an official Twitter account before it was considered a regular thing. Even when it comes to where his dramatic acting chops come from, many people forget that Kutcher's childhood was filled with true pathos and hardship. His twin brother had cerebral palsy and a potentially fatal heart condition which caused him to slip into depression and contemplate and attempt suicide and commit criminal acts. Maybe it's about time that Kutcher faces those demons in a more productive light like playing heavier roles because he certainly has the chops and the emotional capacity to take it on. But still, people should at least give this a chance because it could change his career in a big way. Hell, maybe they'll give us an Aaron Sorkin Steve Jobs movie at the same time that stars Christian Bale who's playing the older Jobs. Who knows? Just wait and see and give him a chance before you shit on him.
