If it's crap... We'll tell you

Variety reports that Chuck Russell is set to direct a 3D reworking of Arabian Nights.

He co-wrote the script, which is about a young commander who joins forces with Sinbad, Aladdin and his genie to rescue Scheherazade and her kingdom from dark powers, with Barry P. Ambrose.

With an estimated budget of $70 million, the film is slated to begin production in April.

Now this does sound interesting. I remember the made-for-TV mini-series that played in 2000 and really liked it. Of course, I am supprised that the film makers had the audacity to make an historial accounting of the pairing of Iraqi sailor Sinbad, the asian moslum Aladdin from Sanmarkand and the so-called "theif" Ali-Baba from Damascus. It appears that a dark 1000-year-old sorcerer named Xussia (of fabled Numidia) working under cover of a secret identity was workin on magic spells transcripted from a grand grimoir (otherwise known in Latin as a Neco-Nomicon) to unshackel one of the Great Old Once held in the Unspeakable Place of Darkenss. The fallout of cosmic energy from this spell not only unleaded the demon god (named Pazzuzzu) but also sent tremmore through time and space. The trio of heros was also joined by body-swapping time-travel agent Jack Deth, body builder and wrestler Herekles of Greece and Green Lantern Corps operative Noran Radd.
